XSPC D5 Pump gently squeaking

Hi all,

Got an XSPC Raystorm D5 kit from Overclockers and it works fab. Temps are pretty low and I've got this loop:

Rad -> Pump -> CPU (I7) -> GPU (ATI 7950) -> Rad

Coolant is standard clear coolant (can't remember the brand) and a bit of distilled water mix.

My problem, if it is even a problem is that under load my pump is making a gentle squeaking noise as if there is a mouse in there. It's not loud, doesn't appear to affect performance and is only annoying when the games are quiet.

Is this normal for a water cooled system?

I had this problem ages ago with my '72 Mustang and it turned out to be air trapped in the cooling system that the bleed wasn't getting out properly - is this possible and if so how do I check for trapped air in a PC based cooling system?

Thanks for your help,
Blitz

Yes it could be air take of fill cap and gently rock the machine side to side you can stick alittle kitchen towel over the fill cap to stop minor splashes if your res is low top it up afterwards i have read lots of this on the forums most rock it about 30 to 60 times back and forth in all directions making sure all air is out of the loop and if their are any micro bubbles in you tube just flick it lightly. :)

Thanks to you both.

Spixel, if it is a graphics card coil whine/squeak/etc is there an easy fix to this. The only place in my whole system where there is a tight corner for the tubing is at both inlet/outlet of the GPU Block. Block is a EK reference block for the 7950 in the newer style.

Scotsdragon, I'll also give your method a try as it can't hurt to try and remove any air from the system.

Is this what it sounds like?

There's not much you can do about it as it happens on every card to some extent, only noticeable in quiet pc's. Some people say that leaving the graphics card run at full load overnight will fix it. Enabling vsync also helps as it limits the FPS. The higher the fps, the louder the noise.

Now you're under water, if it's the graphics card clock it as high as it will go and leave it running heaven 4.0 overnight. Should fix it :)

Hi Spixel, yes that's precisely what it sounds like. Looks like your experience and knowledge served you correctly! I must admit it's much worse on this poor person's PC!

I'll overclock it and run it overnight using Heaven 4.0 and we'll see if it sorts it.

I also performed the actions that Scotsdragon suggested and that's got a couple of bubble from the pump (I think).

To eliminate the pump, you could briefly (a few seconds) unplug it and see if the noise goes. If yes, then it's the pump, if not, then Spixel is probably spot on.

Well...errr....this is all rather embarrassing.

I've isolated the sound.

It's my hard drive and apparently is perfectly normal for make/model of 2tb drive I've got. It's just that my liquid cooled PC is so quiet that I can now hear the gentle chirrup of my HDD.

Sorry for wasting folks time!
