Virgin Media New Traffic Management

i think this Traffic Management Policy is better tbh because theres no 10am to 3pm STM on weekdays, unlike before. so you've got from 11pm to 4pm next day with full speed and without any STM...

I think the new STM is fine, only issue I have is upload limits and reductions, even on the 120mb package you should still get 6mb when reduced considering bt FTTC get 15mb plus.

Yep it's the upload limits i'm annoyed at too, the download caps are fine for 120mb IMO as 72mb when capped isn't that bad.

I tested the upload restrictions last night and uploaded 2.5GB straight. The second the cap kicked in it dropped me from 1.4MB/s to ~300KB/s and the worst part was that uploading while capped at that speed absolutely killed doing anything else, even web pages would take 4 or 5 seconds to load. That never happened until this new system came into place, before i could upload to my hearts content and nothing else would be affected whether capped or not.

Just got home, steam downloaded updates and downloaded what was remaining of l4d2 already throttled... been home like what 30 minutes.

5750MB that's the 2 hour threshold so if I ever download a new video games I will already be capped to 60mbps in most cases.
You can download 6Gigabytes in less than 30 minutes, you should at least be able to utilise the full 100mbps for 1 hour.

I agree totally - the download limits aren't really that bad.

As for upload, it's an absolute killer and will pretty much stop some evening activities I do on the 1-2 days I do it!

I have been offered 10mb upload, to basically make sure I dont leave.

That means a tops a 75% reduction would give me 2.5mbps upload which would work fine for me.

How come?

Did you phone up and have a little moan? Or did they tell you?

Pretty much moaned, politely.

I went through the contract, clearly says "significant changes" are allowed to result in cancellation without a fee. Once I started going down that route they seemed very quick to offer 10mb.

If you do go down that route, significant isn't defined in there contract which means its open to how I see it. I saw this as significant changes and built most of my convo from that.

Yet to get the 10mb, will give it until the end of tomorrow or it will be another call

Ooo, nice one. Best giving it a try I guess. Since my superhub has recently packed up i've got more to moan about.

Might just try and end the contract, be free of the burden.

I spoke to soon, still on 5mb...nothing they can do apparently on their end.

Will be phoning to cancel, waste of more time and arguments no doubt

They admit the new upstream traffic management is a significant change, but want to still charge me to cancel! They say that only relates to prices, but in the contract it makes no mention of it having to be pricing!

How easy were they to offer you an increase? They aren't budging at all for me and no matter what I say or even quote from their own contract they want to charge me to exit the contract. I don't even want to leave, I just want rid of these stupid upstream caps. Waiting for a callback from the managers manager tomorrow.

Im definitely going to throw the towel in on virgin. Always handy that i've now got a fibre line going through my garden. Would any other ISP reuse my FTTC line?

You can always report it to ofcom if you really think they are acting out of contract. It is a significant change and so is the downstream traffic management especially as I am now no able to utilise my connection at 100mbps so at full rate for upto 45 minutes before I get capped. That is 45 minutes of downloads you are allowed in a 2 hour period basically.

Sorry miscalculation.... around 10 minutes is 7500MB ¬_¬

the only way to get 10 Mb upload early, is to call VM and ask them to change u from xxl100 to 100.. I did this

xxl100 is 100/5 then upgraded to 10, 100 is 100/10.

Capped speed results but feels and runs a lot worse than it looks, it feels very sluggish. Actually looking at getting a quote from Origin Broadband now they are offering between 70 - 100mbps with no traffic management and 10 mbps upload. Which is better than 100mbps rate which is actually just 50mbps with a 10 minute premium bonus add-on.

Compared to what I used to get consistently, couldn't really care less what they offer me at this stage the connection runs like crap when there are two of you sharing that connection. You get faster upload on ADSL2+

Any advice on getting out of contract with virgin, or can I just downgrade all my packages just keep the line and lowest tier broadband and get a new non-traffic managed line installed. As long as I am not paying more than £80 a month I don't mind. What are they like with things like that?

I am awaiting a phonecall today from a 'Broadband Expert'

Once I have spoken to them and no doubt pointed out AGAIN that I am not interested in the Download caps due to Twitch Streaming I will again through to disconnections. No doubt they will argue that it isn't a significant change, though that isn't define in the contract.

I will keep you updated on how I get on, I am in for the long haul so if it takes a letter to VM / OfCom etc / The press...

No bother, new BT line is getting installed on May 9th. :).

I originally paid for the top package to avoid any form of management, I'd already signed to BT before reading this information, but now I'm more certain of my decision.
