My point is religion shouldn't come in to it, just because people do barbaric things in the name of a religion doesn't mean the religion itself is at fault.

Double tap to the face doesn't disarm dead man's triggers such as, say, the one the older guy appeared to have last time the EOD bots were poking him.
As for the protecting-your-loved-ones bit, it didn't seem to do the MIT officer much good and he was almost certainly armed. Sure, he was possibly taken by surprise, but it's not like the gunman is going to knock on your door politely.
