I was wondering if anyone had any views on the Archos Platinum 97 9.7" 8GB IPS Tablet?

I am looking at getting a ~10 inch android tablet pretty much purely for browsing the web and watching 1080p mkv files (movies and tv shows, up to 15gb in size and up to ~ 15mbps video bitrate). Obviously any tab will be fine for browsing so my main concern is getting a tab that can take any bluray file i can throw at it with no stuttering/juddering.

I was completely decided on the nexus 10 32gb due to the screen resolution and cpu/ram as it should be able to handle anything. However now i've seen this archos which has a quad core cpu and good enough resolution for 1080p movie playback. It would be quite a saving to get the archos and add in my existing 32gb micro sd card rather than shell out £389 on the nexus.

They are currently on pre-order here on overclockers so i'm assuming no-one has any first hand knowledge, but looking at the specs should it be up to scratch? Is the quad core a7 better than the dual core a15 for 1080p playback?

Any opinions greatly appreciated.

I have been looking at this and currently have it on pre-order else where.

I was going to plunge for the Onda V972 but after not wanting chinglish all over it and maybe running the risk of firmware issues (i believe after V1.32 and now V2.0 has been released all the issues where sorted)

I HOPE that that the Platinum comes with a solid firmware and they do not leave us hanging with some crusty firmware that never gets updated.

There are a few people who say the Platinum HD is really just a rebranded Onda V972 which i would tend to agree. The reason I want to stay with the Platinum is that i *hope* it will be better supported here as an English product.

The only issue is it only comes in white...

Don't count on it Archos are notoriously bad at updating their tablets I know I have one that was released towards the end of last year that isn't even being updated from ICS to jellybean.

Do you think the hardware is capable of running 1080p files on that large resolution display without any problems?

Went with the onda v972 in the end and the v973 has just been released - 1.2mm thinner or so. At least they seem release new firmware rapidly...

Bought direct from the factory, should be arriving today - super snappy delivery.
