in training for the charity ride so today i thought i'd try and do 50miles at an 18mph average on my own. On the ride the longest stint is 40miles and it would be in a group to. Managed 50miles in just over 2 3/4hr.

Managed 17.9mph average as i was over 18mph average until last 5 miles and i hit the wall.

Guess i need to eat more than 4x weetabix, a banana before the ride and half a bottle of water and 2 x gel packs on the ride.
What would you guys recommend?
I know about some chocolate flapjack bites which i'll be taking with me in the future and gel packs which i use.

I'm a big fan of soreen and flap jacks.

When is your charity ride? Is it the Paris in 24 hour one I remember reading about?

What a lovely day for a ride, surprised I didn't see more people out, although the route I took wasn't exactly classic riding with a lot of traffic lights on the way, can feel myself getting faster as my average is slowly creeping up, rode with a semi pro of some sort for about 10 miles of my route, which contributed to killing me trying to keep up, but learnt some things just by watching the way he rides, he also took me on a much better route for that section than I had planned.

Think I'll be going out on the mtb tomorrow for a shorter ride to mix it up a bit.

Ti frame is back and the weld looks good.

Started rebuilding but someone demanded that I go feed the ducks and buy icecream so I didn't get very far.

Hope to get the guards on tonight and get the cables in the shifters ready for finishing off tomorrow.

Managed to finally get my road bike from Norwich to my new place near Cambridge today - 68 miles @ 17.9mph average (my first solo metric century, 110km :)). I feel like I'm cheating a bit compared to the rest of you though, you can't find a hill round here if you try :o

Quick technical question re: bottom brackets...I have a square taper, it's done about 2200 miles, for the last 200 miles or so there's been a clicking noise at times coming from that area. I've checked there's nothing rubbing against any moving parts and the pedals are fine - any other suggestions?

Could be a lot if things with a BB but I'd whip it out and see if you can make out if its coming from the barings or not.

The last weird BB sounds I had turned out to be coming from the saddle rails.

Probably dirt in the bearings.
If you take the chain off and spin the cranks freely do they still make any noise?

Square taper BBs are simple things but you need the special tool for it. It's easy enough to clean and grease the brearings and reassemble if you have the tool.

edit: yep, as Asprilla said, clicky noises can be very deceptive, especially on carbon frames which echo the noises around. Would still be worth servicing your BB bearings if it hasnt been done before though.

I think its recommended to have 1g of carbs per kg of body weight per hour although i havent done enough miles to justify this (low 40's) at the moment due to one thing or another.
Bought some Clif shot blocks from this seller to try instead of buying a full box:- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/350745954014?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

They are jelly like rather than runny like gels.

I also take Soreen and flapjack if we have made any recently.

Cheers guys. It's on 6th July King. Got some flap jack bites and i'll stick a few of them in my pocket so i can eat when needed.

1g of carbs - so that is 80 per hour. Not sure how much is in these gel packs. I eat one an hour. Maybe it should be 2 but at nearly £2 a time when cycling is supposed to be cheap... lol

You can make your own energy drinks which cheapens things a bit.

I just made a basic Maltodextrin/Fructose mix.

Nice, my friends just cycled from London to Paris via Amiens over 3 days so doing it in one day is very impressive. Ill be sure to sponsor closer to the time so make sure keep reminding everyone.

Did the 70km sportif today. Huge improvement over last year, I could walk after getting off the bike for starters!

Got into the 35-40km average speed starting wave and got into a decent bunch after 10km or so once it had shaken down a bit.

Small CAT4 climb after 40km, I pulled out 30 seconds or so easily on the group here, seem to find the climbs easier than most, usually practice at least one climb per ride so must be paying off! The decline afterwards there was a big crash last year so I wanted to avoid a descent in a group.

Went under 2 hours which I was happy with, 36.5kmh average.

So, as i was relaxing after my 100km ride last night, one of my mates pinged me on fb to ask if i wanted to join them doing a 100km ride today going up to Loch Lomond and back. I've rather foolishly agreed.

I'm sure it'll be great training, but i sense this might hurt a bit after yesterday's exertions. However they are both doing the Etape Caledonia too and i know that one of them hasn't done any training at all for it, so i sense this might be a fairly slow paced ride!
