playing older games with onboard graphics.. twitchy

i have the almighty HD1000 on my celeron and it works pretty well for a few older games. i've recently been playing gta3/VC and flatout 2. i can have the resolution set to 1080p and framerates have been mostly fine but one thing that bothers me is that movement can be quite twitchy. i'm just wondering if anyone else has noticed this?
 
Going to be honest this just comes with the low level graphics. I tried to play portal with on-boards on my 955 and while working movement was painfully slow and twitchy.
 
i thought as i was getting smooth framerates, i wouldn't have this problem but you're probably right. after a bit more testing, framerates do get choppy in flatout2 if i change the view to outside the car. i'll have a play around with lower resolutions to see if that helps.

just a few more weeks until i scrape the pennies together for a better GPU. :p
 
to be fair though, with racing games you'll probably not notice a lower resolution that much anyway.

it'll certainly make it playable until you've got more GPU horse power.
 
I'm currently using on-board graphics (HD4000), while my card is away for repair / replacement. I appreciate that there must be quite a difference between a 1000 and 4000, but nonetheless I can't say I've noticed the symptoms you describe.

Just a bit of difference.

Have to be honest, general dodgyness comes with the territory with onboard graphics. There isn't a whole lot you can do. You might be getting decent FPS but there is always something wrong, be that smoothness or graphics glitches. Last time I used onboard graphics any form of transparency came up as a solid purple. You could try setting a lower resolution - you might not notice it that much if you do it right and it will improve FPS a lot which might help smooth things out.
 
Mate, the intergrated graphics in an i5 isn't even enough to run Torchlight II on minimum at 768p, or Bastion... WITH some light overclocking! So don't sweat it. You definitely should get an actual GPU, if money is an issue you can easily get a 5850 for a few pennies, and that'll run even 2013 games on medium providing you have the CPU to support it. I haven't got a clue which CPUs have the HD1000, but given the fact the i5's are HD4000, I'm guessing you'll be needing a new CPU too. :p Good luck!
 
I use on board gfx in a few games. The gfx on the laptop is quite noisey. It seems to make no difference to KSP, endless space and a few others. None are graphically demanding. KSP is limited by CPU anyway rather than gfx.
But as others say it comes with using low power. Could well be CPU limited rather than gfx.
 
Didn't know anyone on here would have a celeron for gaming :eek: the HD4000 on the i5 is pretty good, it can even run battlefield 3 on the lowest settings (not very smooth and barely playable) but its impressive that it can run it at all :)

it wasn't really my intention to start gaming again. after selling my last proper PC off last year, i was just looking at getting something to browse the web with. i was even checking the MM for laptops as that's all i wanted. but they were proving too expensive so i cobbled together a little celeron machine.

but then i got thinking... after looking at a few benchmarks it's comparable to the old 3GHZ wolfdales so i reckon i'll just grab something like a used GTX460/6850/6870 and that will be a good match for what i have. i have no interest in newer games at all. i don't even have proper internet (only 3G) so i can't even buy stuff off steam any more.

i might have to reconsider my options if GTAV comes out on PC. i will have to upgrade for that. given that will probably be a long time off, hopefully used i3/ non-k i5 prices will drop into my price range.
