Got raped by Steam

yes, but the history of the item probably doesn't include "on this date, this account was stolen/compromised and therefore this otherwise unremarkable trade is the shoddy one" - certainly not the publicly accessible version anyway.

And alas, the thread was deleted! I did say Valve were horrendously overrated many months ago, this time next year they'll be winning the worst company poll if there is any justice.

Contact Gabe, Overslop. If he doesn't do anything then the best thing you can do is try and get the story to some sites, it might hit the limelight! Knock em down a peg or three.

I don't think it's been completely deleted. One of the mods said he was going to move it to a private area where it will be drawn to the attention of Valve employees.

For Slop's sake I hope you're right!

Too right mate, they aint much better than any other company, including EA, yet nobody dares say anything against them, it's pretty saddening. :(

Your'e right of course. I just wish they would let me prove my innocence as best as I can. Not knowing which item(s) were hijacked and their general refusal to assist me makes this very hard.

I do feel your pain - but I sort of agree with Skyfall and if you don't know if the goods you are receiving were legally obtained or not - then putting your hands up and saying "not guilty - didn't know they were dodgey" - is not good enough.

especially with a prior warning.

whether this means the system as it is - is broken or not - is another matter - but in isolation I'd say Valve haven't really done anything wrong.

its the same in the "real world" is it not ? with regards to receiving illegally sourced goods ? Would you buy off friends and family with confidence the item was not stolen - yes - would you buy from some stranger in a pub ? no

It's more like buying off ebay than a stranger in a pub. Afterall to steam trade you have to have an account etc, similar to ebay.

If you bought a laptop off ebay and it turned out to be stolen you're an innocent party in that, it's the seller who sold it fraudulenty.

All I hear is WOE IS ME. These threads are utterly pointless as you only get one side of the story.

Let's look closer at the situation. Here is OP's rep thread on SourceOP. http://forums.sourceop.com/threads/128670-Overslop-s-Rep-Thread

SourceOP is considered the black market when it comes to TF2 items. A key bought officially from Valve's store sells for $2.49, but on the black market you can find them for much cheaper prices sometimes as low as $1.30.

Just looking at some of his transactions:
"sold him 60 keys via paypal , he went first, smooth trade
+rep" - by user manhunter - his steamrep profile shows he is a credit card theif and later banned.

"He bought 109 keys. +rep" - by user Lot - That person is later banned for hijacking accounts, and selling items... funny comment from his ban thread "NO WONDER HE SELLS SO CHEAP"
http://forums.steamrep.com/threads/76561198058732982-justlot.18444/

Valve warned him to stop buying items off the black market, and he continued.

This is a standard warning from Valve:
Our records show that you received a number of items/gifts that were stolen from hijacked Steam accounts. We have removed all of these items/gifts from your account.

Please refrain from accepting stolen items/gifts or the account may be permanently disabled. Valve reserves the right to refer the matter to the appropriate authorities if such activity continues.

When Valve continually sees you buying hijacked items, and gives you a warning and then you ignore it? I don't see why anybody would be outraged.

It's pretty clear why Valve is doing this. Get in touch with the press? Valve is the worst company? LOL

OP is clearly a smart guy, but his excuse to ignore the warning is laughable. It sure seems like he found a good way to make a profit, and simply didn't want it to end.

but if I had thousands of dollars in TF2 items locked up I'd fight for them too.

People are still be allowed to trade on SourceOP. Valve themselves have stated it is allowed, but if something does go wrong, they will not assist in any way, and to do it at your own risk. So most of what you said isn't really relevant after that.

It's stated right here:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1604864

"Trades made outside the Team Fortress 2 trading system are done so at your own risk and we cannot assist you in recovering items lost in such trades."

Why should everyone be so worried about trading, in case you did receive an item from a hijacked account, he himself didn't hijack the account, so why should he be penalized for it? Yes he was warned before, but the point still stands that he did not hijack the account himself, he had no knowledge that items were taken from hijacked accounts, there is no way of knowing that items were taken from hijacked accounts, so why he should be banned for it doesn't really make sense.

In all honesty though if I had been warned that I may be punished for receiving stolen goods I'd either sell everything and quit or sell everything before continuing to buy from people. Carrying on as usual after being warned is just asking for trouble really.

What is black market thought ? is there a big sign on the door when you open that website that says "black market"

The keys being sold outside of steam have to be cheaper than valve's store, otherwise nobody would buy them. Simple laws of supply and demand. The fact they are cheaper than valve's store price means jack.

If you said "I'll sell you these for $2.49 which might be stolen and get your account deactivated, or you can buy them 100 % fool proof from valve for $2.49." It would be a no brainer.

Hello there,

I see where you're coming from but here's my take on a few things you said.

SourceOP is considered the black market when it comes to TF2 items

That's honestly the first time I've ever heard of SourceOP being referred to as the "black market". I've been open about my dealings there from the start. This Valve member created the site himself:

http://steamcommunity.com/id/drunkenf00l/

People sell keys cheap because competition drives the price down. If I sold a hat for 300 keys then I could only sell them by competing also and this is what all traders do. If someone has stolen the keys or charged back with a credit card or something then of course Valve should take action but I don't see how they should ban members who traded with these accounts. When I traded with those 2 accounts you mentioned they both had clean profiles. In Manhunter's case now, I see it only shows the possibility of foul play. In both cases, they don't appear to be trade banned, despite the former being marked as a scammer.

If I am lucky enough to get the ban overturned then I'm closing up shop as it's just too risky. But I don't think buying/selling keys on Source OP was breaking any rules - those that were scamming/stealing/hijacking should have been dealt with severely. Those like myself who bought keys from other traders in good faith should not be held to account to the actions of the criminals.

I still don't know which items are definitely the hijacked ones. It could be some keys, it could be some hat I traded for which turned out to be "duped". In any case, I don't think a trade ban is remotely fair considering the circumstances. Others may, and clearly do feel differently but as you said I've got thousands of dollars locked up and I need to fight to get them freed.

Ahahahahahahaha, I can only imagine the frothing at the mouth in anticipation for that one

:D

It is asking for trouble yes, however it's still unfair to not be able to trade, in fear that you may be banned for whatever reason.

The person who hijacked the account should be banned, and any subsequent people should just get the items removed, or at least give them the chance to give the money back to the people who lost out because of the items, and not ban them. Banning someone for it is ridiculous.

This is the way I see it

Hijacked account -> Hijacker -> Overslop -> Tradee

Hijacked account gets all items back
Hijacker (First person who receives the items off hijacked account) banned
Overslop refunds money to tradee
Tradee doesn't lose out on anything

This makes more sense, Overslop will lose out, yes, but at least he wouldn't be banned, and the person who actually hijacked the account would be the only one made to suffer.
