Looking to move up from my Acer 24" 1920x1200 TN monitor. The main thing I'm after is IPS, so it seems 27" is the way to go, as I don't really want to drop to 23".

Seen loads of good deals on 27" 1080p IPS monitors, but they're inevitably dogged by cries that they must look awful at that size and resolution. Are they really that bad with the slightly reduced PPI? Seems like people shouting who've never actually owned one.

The other option is a Korean import so I can go up to 1440p, but I'm pretty sure I'd need some more grunt for games than just a 5850, so thats more expense.

Is it really worth it?

To a degree it depends how close you sit to your monitor, some people have said they actually like the larger font on a 1920x1080 monitor and as far as watching HD content then it potentially looks better as that is it's native res. Whilst some people post that you need a higher res. on a 27" monitor, I'm guessing there are lot's of people who own and use them and who are quite happy. As far as games go then the larger res. will look better but you'll need the GPU grunt to power it, there is the 27" 2560x1440 DGM which is quite often on offer and IMO is a better bet than a cheaper import with potential warranty issues (should anything go wrong).

I have a 27" 1080p IPS monitor and I think its superb, but my eyes are getting on a bit lol

I also have a 27" 1080p monitor and think it is superb for both general windows work and also gaming. Perhaps if I had ever experienced 1440p I would find it limiting but outside of graphic design etc. there is only so much desktop real estate you realisticaly need.

The decisive factor for me however is that 1440p will require significantly more graphical grunt in order to play at native resolution. I'd rather play at 1080p on ultra settings as opposed to a higher resolution but at medium settings (for example).

Thanks for the replies. Really appreciate the diversity of opinions!

I think this is the key factor. My 5850 is quite happy at High+ settings at 1200p and I don't have the money to get a 1440p monitor and a new GPU.

The cost difference is stark. I've seen an LG 1080p 27" for under £170 at a UK retailer whereas something like the DGM 1440p is going to be £320 even if it's on offer.
