Hi

Situation is as follows.

Dual boot win7 / Linux with grub menu at startup.

Swapped out mobo/cpu for new one.

Wouldn't boot.

Formatted drive c and tried agin.

Grub menu comes up but can't boot from CDROM.

Booted into Linux from the grub and it saw the CDROM ok.

The CDROM is SATA not IDE.
BIOS is set to AHCI(?) not IDE.
I have changed bios to boot from CDROM but to no effect.
When i formatted the original C drive from the command prompt there was no drive D:\

So i reckon the CDROM is not recognised on a normal boot. Is there a problem with first time boots from SATA? Any other BIOS settings i should be considering?

If anyone has any ideas how to fix this that would be much appreciated.

thanks

Thanks for the comments.

I have no bootable USB. Can you get a download to create a bootable USB that i could then run setup.exe to reinstall win7 (assuming the USB boot process recognises a SATA CDROM). Not sure what i would need to do this.

Yeh you can, my windows 7 copy is on a USB stick since I don't have the CD anymore.

There you can download an ISO of w/e windows 7 you have (or you can get it through other means), then you can use the the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool from microsoft, to turn a USB drive into a bootable USB drive with windows 7 on it.
Or you can just download Deamon Tools Lite and run the ISO from your desktop and install :)

Do you have access to another computer? What you need to do is create an image on your windows disc (Nero will do) and a usb driver that is at least 4gb in size.

Install the windows make usb bootable tool and path link your link to the program, Click ok once done.

In your bios select the usb drive as the main boot drive and it should start installing.

Sorry about crammed and no links but on my phone atm.

thanks

am downloading now

what exactly does this .exe file do? Is it meant to be run from a working copy of win to put an image onto a USB stick?

Yes you need to install it and run the program and it will go through selecting the ISO and the USB Drive and then it will do it for you.
You can also do it through the command line but thats more complicated.

It's a program to turn a USB stick into NTFS and install an iso of your choice on to. It will basically allow you to create a bootable USB for Windows with the right iso, so you'll need an iso with Win7 to use.

There are plenty of Linux options available that do the same if needed.
