Tonnes of scammers in Paris.

Little did he know that I was a karate black belt and was promptly swept off of his feet, where he lay groaning with the wind knocked out of him. I stuffed the note into his mouth and promptly shouted in French "Try to mug me now **** face?".

That thoroughly ruined my Paris trip
What I can't figure out is if you hit him, or he simply recoiled at the revelation that you were in fact a black belt. I hope the latter!

Got any videos describing how they would exactly try and scam you?
I can tell you If you like, or link to a post, I don't think theres vids.

let's just say both.

There’s a warrior in every man. And it stirs when you put a keyboard in its hand.

Lol

Last time I was in Paris, about 8 months ago, it was infested with Romanian beggars. Seemed to be at least a gang or two of them at each 'tourist spot'.

nowt changes then was there in 97 and 98 was shocked to see a woman sat begging on a filthy floor on the underground she didn't have the obligatory small dog for sympathy she had a baby in her arms

Any source would be good.

There are a fair amount ive seen in Paris.

There's the classic pickpocket, most work in pairs. One makes a distraction while their partner empties the patron's wallets/purses/bags of money. Some go as far to actually chunder on a busy train or chuck a fake baby in your arms.

There's the 'Gold ring scam' Where a worthless metal ring plated in cheapy gold or brass is dropped behind the person. This is where the scammer will pick it up and rush over to the victim. They will insist that it was the persons, and try to force it onto your finger/into pocket. Next comes a small sob story and asking for some money. If you give them a paltry amount, they ask for more because they found a nice ring for you, thats 'gold'. So they end up with some dosh while you have a threaded bit with green plating on worth about 50p.

The 'petition' scam is where they will rush up to you and really, I mean REALLY get in your face, asking you to sign this petition. This can go either way, where the friends will mine your pockets, or they ask for a donation to the 'cause'.

Another one is where these gentlemen will beeline to you and will commonly have the audacity to grab and restrain you to attach a 'friendship bracelet' to your arm, then demand an extortionate price (say 20-30 euro). They will go about harassing you or threatening to cough up. I find this very intrusive especially to women that they also prey on normally.

I will also indulge you on one that I experienced a few years back, where a well suited man will 'help' you buy your ticket, you give him the money and he gets a cheaper ticket for you.
What they don't tell you that it's not what you wanted, normally one way to the wrong stops.

I don't believe 40% of what you say.

Edit - 40% is harsh. Maybe 18%. Basically that whole karate leg sweep bit. :)

How so? Why would I elaborate, when it's perfectly true. Users on this forum do support this also. I am a black belt and train regularly at my local club, became first dan one and a half years ago. oct to be precise. I in fact practiced Basaidai as my grading. Was given commendation for my kumite (In case you want evidence)

Why would I let some scum try to nick my money?

Edit: It's harsh because it's reality. Paris' tourist spots are really like this.

Edit*: Isn't exactly hard to sweep a guy's legs, I happened to be able to in a way I know best to disable him. What if he had a knife? And was planning to take it out at the next opportunity?

I take it back OP, your post had a whiff of "keyboard warrior" about it but since you justified it so well you've convinced me otherwise. Carry on :)
