Just wondered what panel tech is in my old 2407wfp monitor? I always assumed ips but read somewhere its actually spva? Are ips/pls panels generally better than pva? Trying to weigh up all the pros and cons of going to one of the new 1440p ips/pls monitors.

Thanks for the panel info :)

So would the panel in say the Asus pb278q be significantly better than mine? Would colours and blacks be better? Or is it purely the res that makes this upgrade worth it?

Mine is the non hc variant.

I just moved from a 2405FPW (PVA) to a Asus PB278Q, I have to say the Dell was an awesome monitor even now when it comes to colour, the Asus has better blacks and slightly better pixel response though not much in it, the colours are great, not sure they are as good but that might be the settings I'm using as I only just had it Saturday.

The input lag is about half what my Dell was, so that's good, just make sure your graphics card can handle what you need or want at 2560x1440, you get about a 25% performance drop in games, as it is my GTX 680 isn't enough for me.

Not sure how close the 2405 is to the 2407 but thought I'd pitch in my experience.

Thanks for posting your experience whitehawk, appreciate it :)

Blacks are the thing I'm most interested in really, as they are probably the one thing about my current monitor that I find disappointing.

I'll most likely be upgrading the graphics card too. Will see how the 480 does first though.

Blacks was a big difference for me, fortunately the Asus doesn't crush the blacks so there is still plenty of shadow detail. And as you may know it has PWM dimming for the brightness control but it doesn't effect me, your experience may very of course.

A similar choice world be the Viewsonic VP2770-LED, that's about £100 more though but doesn't have a PWM dimming backlight and has a USB 3 hub.

Just be aware that monitor has more potential problems than most, but your cash your risk.

I know, just been reading about the issues. A high percentage seem to have terrible yellow bleed in the bottom left corner :(

The Asus is a lot more cash and not really any better (comparing two defect free monitors) though.

Did you go for the dell?

I did and unfortunately mine has terrible yellow bleed in the bottom left corner and a stuck red pixel in the middle of the screen :(

It's getting replaced by Dell next week. If the replacement is no good then I'll get a refund and buy the Asus.

Shocking quality from Dell

Seriously? Gtx680 isn't enough to play games in 2560 by 1440? I have one myself, running on a 24" 1920 by 1200 and it does everything smoothly.

Well from what I've tested so far, even my 480 does ok at 2560x1440 to be honest. Bioshock infinite runs fine on high settings although Crysis 3 I had to drop to a mixture of medium and high settings to be playable.

My gtx 670 coped fine at 2560x1440, only settings I had to turn down were AA, usually play with FXAA or just 2x SSAA but even at this high a resolution the need for AA is pretty small. Games I have played lately are tomb raider and bioshock infinite, bith run fine, occasional slow down (drop below 30fps) but more than playable.

Yeah seriously, a GTX 680 wasn't enough for me on 1920x1200 let alone 2560x1440, I won't put up with less than 60fps so no it's not enough for some games, even more so now with this high a res.

Sure most games are ok, but I want max settings on all games at 60fps and I doubt even a titan can do that on ALL games. There is a reason people get dual cards you know but I don't want to go down that route as that has more issues.
