I'm at a Career Cross Roads/Dilemma

Well the manager may think that now but his view will mean diddly squat in 18 months time when some bean counter wants that position closed and not replaced.

18 months is a long time to assess and find another escape route should you get the feeling that the role might disappear.

DONT RELY ON WHAT YOUR MANAGER SAYS - the role has TEMP in its name for a reason. Not saying the job wont become permanent

Similar situation.

Work for a local authority and an 18 month temp position has come up in another team within our department. The 18 month temp jobs always seem to have a habit of becoming permanent and it is a 4k pay rise. I've asked the dept manager and he's said "don't let the temporary tag put me off and even if it did get binned after 18 months I'd be moved into another team". I've emailed him to ask if he can confirm that so I've got in writing but don't know how solid an email will be. As you can imagine I don't want to be facing an uncertain future in 18 months. Also the ever present threats of further govt cuts could mean redundancies and if I'm working on a temp contract would I be binned 1st.

Why is 18 months an uncertain future - any permie job in the public or private sector has probably a max of 3 months notice should they want to get rid of you or no notice if a company goes under. There's no jobs for life even in your local authority so make decisions for today on what you know rather than what might happen in 18 months time

You could always work as a translator when the SNP separate the Union.

I see this as a potential growth area as I can never understand what a lot of Scots say.

Why TV companies insist on the over representation of Scots on TV is beyond me.

Then again its probably only drivel about z-list celebs that most of England, Wales & Northern Ireland talk about non-stop as well.

He's emailed back saying he can't guarantee any post within the dept especially in the current climate, but it's likely it'll remain after 18 months, and all in all I should feel comfortable about what'd happen if I got it the job.

True, you have to look out for the interested of you and your family and often people's words are worth squat.

I'm quite a careful person and I always go for the safe option by nature though so it's a bit of a though one.

That's pretty much what he's said about no job in here been guaranteed anymore, and I think that everyone knows that. It's just at the moment I'm not 1st in line for the boot if we get stung again, but if I move onto a temp contract from the job I'm currently doing I might be painting a target on my face that isn't there at the moment.
