So, this I definitely agree with. Although I was personally brought in a pretty decent sized house(with land) out in the country, I do often cry(metaphorically) at how confined I am now in a city, virtually living on the doorstep of others, it's just not healthy, mentally or emotionally, and also doesn't promote freedom of the spirit. Do we just not have enough land or money?

No its not healthy, the uk's only going to get worse as the population soars. I intend on emigrating to Canada to get some wilderness, space and better quality of life.

We all have plenty of money, the fact that we have computers and internet access bares this out, but the fact that the large majority of people are not happy with what they got is the problem on that front.

Don't worry about not having enough space as the spiralling decline Britain is in will lead to mass emigration to emerging nations until we are being called a third world nation.

Then our labour costs will be competitive enough for the cycle to change and job creation will begin again and we will revert back to being the workshop of the world.

I hate how small properties are these days, mines a decent enough size but for anything of a good size it's just obscene money.

As above I would love to skip out and emigrate and my line of work makes it possible, but young kids and a strong family support network makes that a no no right now. :p

I don't feel overcrowded nor do I feel that my property is too small :)

Move out of the smoke and you'll do better (for everything).

It's not over crowded at all, rather than making even more planning regulations, that is going to stop housing we need. We need to relax planning, especially green belt building.

The issue is land to build on, setting minimum size isn't going to solve that.

New builds are stupidly small. It's not as if the first time buyer has a choice either, buy tiny new build, or hand lolrent over to pay someone elses mortgage. My father in law put it well the other day 'they are only building rabbit hutches now, not homes'.

Yes you do, do not buy new build. Buy old build.
For the price of a two bed flat(165k)I could get a 3 bed massive house. Yet people are attracted to the 95% mortgage and the brand new decoration. Rather than buying a 100k bad house or a 100k new house. The deposit is not that different.

...but there is a large demographic of people who can only afford the 95% mortgage that comes with a new build, especially with the governments new first buyer schemes.

I live in a new build one bedroom flat.....sorry maisonette :D It has two windows, one at either end. The place feels like a cave. Luckily I've only got a month left in this hole.

Look up 'How TV Ruined Your Life - Aspiration' on youtube. It's Charlie Brooker so full of swearing. He NAILS it as usual.

We most certainly do not.

I took a 95% mortgage on a 100 year old house.

*shudders at the prospect of relaxed planning laws*

Thank god I live in a conservation area where things are tight.

What rubbish. Fly from South to North or whatever and you will see that we are far from being over crowded.
The problem isn't over crowding.

UK has twice the population of Canada. It has the same population as pretty much the whole American Midwest. No not crowded at all.

I'm buying my first house.

We looked at a new build but I couldn't fit in the bath and the shower came to my chest.

Looked at an older house which has plenty of space and is larger.

New builds are a nice idea but not practical when husband and wife are over 6 foot.

Only if you choose to live in a city, but then again by definition a city means.....

Eventually the cities will just blend it to each though, like what is happening between Glasgow and Edinburgh for example, unless you want to put everyone in skyscraper blocks of flats. Everyone believes they are entitled to a house, but there's too many people to pull it off.
