What car?

hmm. Now in desperate need of picking up a new car before I end up without one for a few weeks and unable to turn up to work :p

I've changed my requirements somewhat, I'm now looking at spending a bit less, about 8k max really as we need to replace the other car as well.

I'm not really sure whether to go for a Diesel given the response in this thread, and responses in other threads. I ideally want something that returns a decent MPG, has a bit of grunt to sit on the motorway in and doesn't look too grandaddy (some of those skoda's make me shiver unfortunately :()

Any recommendations or links to anything suitable on autotrader/pistonheads within the ST5 region would be appreciated before I just hit buy on something knaff :9

If I wanted something reasonably cheap for driving up and down the motorway all day at 70ish MPH giving reasonable MPG for about £8K, I would be considering:

VW Passat
Ford Mondeo
Skoda Superb (estate looks better than the hatch)

You really don't want to buy a £8K BMW or Audi and put 20K miles a year on it. Firstly at that price cars are going to be a good few years old which ever increasing repair costs (especially on a modern diesel). Secondly, you will be servicing it at least once a year and unless you know a good indie it will cost you a bit.

Remember to consider of the total cost of ownership not just the initial purchase price.

From what people keep saying, I'm scared of Diesels now :O

The mondeo probably seems to be ideal, I think I'll probably venture down that road. Is the spec in that advert kind of what I should be aiming for with 8k ?

Diesels are not that bad. The problem is that when Common Rail Diesels appeared they became quite complex ... more so than the average petrol car. If you are doing 20K a year, you shouldn't be worried about issues with your particle filter. If you are paranoid about DMF failure buy an automatic. If the turbo fails at 100K... buy a refurbished replacement.

Many people on here have diesels which have done well over 100K miles.

Did you have any issues with your Scirocco?

unfortunately not :(

Mondeo seems to be looking like a winner. A couple in close vicinity of me that I'm going to check out. Any things I should be looking out for?

I've also seen this saab, what are these like ? http://www.pistonheads.com/classifi.../saab-9-3-tid-vector-sport-150hp-2008/1236133

The 9-3 will be due a cambelt at 72,000 and I would get the water pump done at the same time (assuming it's not been done already). My 9-3 has almost 130k on now and is still a good, comfy mile-muncher.
