Is this racist?

I don't think it is racist, it is a fact. i have watched videos where Ron Paul supporters interview people around election time in the street asking who they voting for and why and some blacks openly admitted they voted for Obama due to him being black. more so the first time, but also a generalisation a lot of people of all kinds vote for Obama because they liked his rhetoric and his skin colour did not play in to their choice. I would say promising free stuff like healthcare and Obama phones etc played a bigger part than his skin colour.

I don't think its a racist statement but then again I don't think that the statement is accurate.

There are only 2 options in the USA, and the policies of the Republicans aren't "none white friendly" so the only option left is Obama who as it happens is black.

"Barack Obama was helped by a large proportion of the african-american population voting for him - purely on the basis of being black."

I said it's on the edge of racism - wondering if anyone can clear it up for me.

Only white people can be racist...please try to keep up

It's a two headed coin.

The Republican party is pretty racist, so it's not like you can really judge the situation in any way that's meaningful.

In the USA you have a choice between a racist, sexist, bigoted, homophobic, young earth creationist bunch of religious whack-jobs or their right-wing conservative party (aka Democrats).

Tbh, I doubt many of the people who voted for Obama "because he was black" would have voted for Romney otherwise - the same as the people who would not have voted for him "because he was black" would never have voted Democrat anyway.

In regards to the OP's question.

Putting forward a hypothesis that some people will have been swayed into voting for either Obama or Romney on racial grounds isn't racist.

Saying "Obama only got in because black people voted for him" displays a bit of a racial bias (as it's ignoring the counter side) & is a little racist.

I think you mean only the Majority can be racist.

Reverse discrimination the other way round.

Getting the black vote JUST because he's black isn't racist. However
NOT getting the white vote just because he IS black is racist.

Can you actually be racist in a positive way?

If we're talking purely about the statement, then it depends.

Firstly, is it true that 'a large proportion of the african-american population voting for him - purely on the basis of being black.'

If that is true, then it is no more than a statement of fact.

If it is not true, then is the person making the statement doing so because they are ignorant of the facts, or are they doing it because they are trying to belittle the achievement of him getting to power?

If their intent is to suggest that Obama (as a black man) achieved success because people voted for the colour of his skin, rather than due to his ability/talent, then I would say that you could argue that the statement is racist.

On it's own, it's just a statement which happens to mention a link between race/colour and the way people voted. But you'd have to know what the point being made (or trying to be made) was, in order to determine whether there was a racist element or not.

i agree, thats the only logical "racist" argument. Surely textbook deffinition.
