Don't worry so much about size, manufacturers are never true to real sizes anyway, ones 2.1 could be another's 2.3 etc, always a bit of difference. You want to look what tyres you've got on now and then pick some that will be better, tell us what you're running now and there is bound to be a few opinions.

The back tyre is starting to look a bit worn in places so replacing it wouldn't be bad.

What pressure do you run? Anything higher than 40psi is going to feel skittish. I would try 35 but beware of pinch flatting.
