Defiance - New SyFy series

It's not 'actually' though :p

It's the 2nd part, it's different if the premier was two episodes but it wasn't, it was just longer so it's not two episodes it's one.

Just confusing as hell to refer it to two when in every aspect it's one.

Well where I watched it the premier is presented as parts 1 and 2 and episode 2 as part 3 - which makes it a bit confusing coz some people I talk to when referring to episode 2 think I mean part 2 of the premier.

So, in essence, every time there is a new sci fi show on the horizon most of us hope that this time around we are going to get something different, original, maybe even sophisticated. The Sci Fi version of what Breaking Bad was to family dramas, the Sopranos of crime stories, the Wire of procedurals. But every time, without fail we get the same infantile, kids book stories with humanoids in weird makeup serving as heavy handed hyperbole to our own world.

You mean like BSG?

In the end genre defining shows don't come along that often. I'm enjoying this, it's far too early to tell whether it'll be good or not really.

What we are missing are the spaceship based shows, Star Trek, Firefly, Andromeda, BSG, Babylon 5, Stargate and Farscape.

These show that people want to watch us go into space in ships and fight aliens, not have these stuck in one small place on earth (or other single planet) character shows.

Basically we want cool ships, big explosions and lasers, lots and lots of lasers.

Maybe they don't want the show to be based on shows like Star Trek, Firefly, Andromeda, BSG, Babylon 5, Stargate and Farscape? :p

I personally don't like any of them and like this and terra nova so I'm happy they're not comparable to those :p

Second episode was...alright. Nothing remarkable, but it hasn't put me off. It's still lacking any real sense of atmosphere though, and none of the characters are really being developed aside from the evil white alien guy.

Nice to see Jaime Murray back on tv. I note that she's wearing slightly more clothing as Stahma Tarr than in her Gaia (Gods of the Arena) role. :)

She's bland and boring, but meh, BSG I wasn't a fan of simply because the "we talk about god a lot therefore our show is smart", didn't distract from the utter lunacy(in a bad way) of so many characters. It was decent though, the difference between Defiance and BSG is quality, while I didn't love BSG's writing and some of the cast, some of the cast were brilliant, infact a lot of the cast was(I couldn't stand Starbuck, she was not at all hot, a complete ****, insane, poorly written and made no sense at all). The writing was well well well above what Defiance has, the effort put in. Defiance is the lazy ass tv movie version of sci fi, BSG was the summer blockbuster in comparison.

Dodgy backup cast with no strength or talent, dodgy cgi, dodgy writing, dodgy idea's. The lead alien guy is a poor actor and doesn't pull off "scary" in the slightest, Murray as the subtle controlling wife is, incredibly unsubtle and very poorly written.

Its just a very very poor show, the premise is fine but it basically needs 5-6 quality actors to carry the show and massively better writing. Its such a lazy, broad, tamely done attempt at sci fi that its a joke. The "witty" alien doctor, was not at all witty, a horrendously poor actress with the timing and delivery of donut, the ex mayor being put forward as mastermind behind a plot, weak source acting, its just pathetic.

ANother thing I find is, yeah all shows have stories in similar, because kids do get into trouble and sneak off and get lost, thats believable, and with good acting it can work, and good writing. I guess there are shows that occasionally fall back onto cliched story lines, but back it up with good writing and acting, and there are shows where EVERY episode is like 4 different cliched, all poorly writen, all rushed through, all done with bad actors, just becomes a joke.

I don't expect much and it's too early to really say but it does look like it's going to be a very typical syfy show, something to watch but predictable and doesn't seem to try, no real interesting characters or buildup to anything.

A lot of shows these days do have season long arcs but few are any good or pay off and most of the time we're left with troubles of the week type stuff, id like to see some epic space based scifi with more than a handful of characters, stargate universe could have been good but they wasted the opportunity by trying to imitate bsg and thinking too small, making it mostly character based with little going on out there, i also think they were stupid not to get in some new writers as they had been doing sg-1 for so long and probably not very imaginative by that point but they did make some epic season finales, some of the best space battles were in that show.
