I have overclocked my i5 2500k to 4.5Ghz and iv got it stable at around 1.332 Vcore, Im just worried that its running a bit hot, im getting temperatures in the low 80's when i run prime 95 or intel burn test and it idles in the high 30's/ low 40's. My cooler is a zalman 9700 and my motherboard is a gigabyte P67A-D3-B3, i thought my thermal paste may need replacing so i have ordered some more, but would it be better to consider getting a new better fan or are these tempratures fine ?

Thanks in advance :)

seems a bit hot to me,i usually try to stay below 80c

maybe a better cooler/heatsink would help? but see what some new paste achieves first

The heatsink probably isnt the best.

Do the usual checks though, reseat the cooler, ensure its mounted securely

The temperatures aint the best but they are not dangerous.

You also have to remember that the stress tests are worse case temperatures, your never gonna see those temps while gaming unless the game is massively heavy on the cpu, even then I doubt it would raise the temp like ITB can

ok if the thermal paste didnt work, what would be a good upgrade cooler ? and ye i have checked my temps the max they hit in games seem to be 60 degrees, is it safe running a that for a few hours say ?

my case is a casecom 6788 and my ram is pretty high profile I think, its 8gb of kingston hyperx blu 1600Mhz :) and i guess my budget would be under £40 if possible

Oooo I have that case, your ram will be an issue though, you need to lose the ram heatsinks or buy some Samsung green memory or corsair vengeance lp

then plump for a noctua d14 air cooler,it fits perfect in that case

im running a 2600k @4.5ghz 1.344v and max in ibt max stress I see are 75c and that's with multithreading on ect, without multithreading on your cpu id expect around 70-72c

YOUR BASKET
1 x Phanteks PH-TC12DX CPU Cooler - Blue (Socket 775 / 1150 / 1155 / 1156 / 1366 / 2011 / AM2 / AM2+ / AM3 / FM1 / FM2) £44.98
1 x Noctua NH-U9B SE2 CPU Cooler (Socket 775 / 1155 / 1156 / 1366 / 2011 / AM2 / AM2+ / AM3 / FM1 / FM2) £40
1 x Thermalright True Spirit 140 BW Cooler (Socket 775 / 1155 / 1156 / 1366 / 2011 / AM2 / AM2+ / AM3 / FM1 / FM2) £34.99
1 x Cooler Master Hyper 612S CPU Cooler (Socket 775 / 1155 / 1156 / 1366 / AM2 / AM2+ / AM3 / FM1 / FM2) £32.99
1 x Thermalright Macho 120 CPU Cooler (Socket 775 / 1155 / 1156 / 1366 / 2011 / AM2 / AM2+ / AM3 / FM1 / FM2) £29.99
1 x Alpenföhn Matterhorn Pure Edition CPU Cooler (Socket 775 / 1155 / 1156 / 1366 / AM2 / AM2+ / AM3 / FM1 / FM2) £29.99
Total : £224.93 (includes shipping : £10.00).

any of those would be a good cooler. The Cooler master one is a really good one, also the Phanteks.

One thing to be aware of is how tall some of them are. I couldnt find what the max cooler height for your case was but I know for sure a Megahalems would fit as google images shows it in your case.

Try to find out the max cpu cooler height your case can fit before buying

Your ram is not an issue, I had the Genesis grey before and it isn't high profile at all and as far as i can tell the blu is the same height

some of the ones something else posted might do you

it is expensive the d14 but worth it,plus it would mean changing your ram

the ones above might be fine for you though

one other thing when im testing for stability i use realtemp to monitor the temprature this claims that Iam hitting the 80's but i have set an alarm in bios to set off at 70 degrees and the alarms only setting off after it hits say 83?

****, those temps seem high for an NH-D14.

My 2500k @4.4GHz w/ 1.35V (more like 1.37V with LLC) VCore gets up to about 60c while stress testing on a PH-TC14PE.

I have 8 threads though vs your 4

what are you stressing with? intel burn test maximum stress? plus ive ditched the noctua fans for quieter running akasa apache ones max 1200rpm

EDIT: you were right, its been ages since I last stressed it so forgot

I was seeing around 75.c max on my 2500k with a D14 Cpu at 4.6ghz and 1.365v.

Anything under 80.c will be fine. IBT will make it run hotter I find a couple of hours of Prime and then a good gaming session better at testing stability. If your temps are 60.c ish when gaming and it is stable then there is no problem.

If you want a new cooler you cannot go wrong with a D14 it's about as good as you will get with air cooling. Grab the 2011 version and the 1155 fitting kit you then get the PWM fans.

I get around 60 (hottest temp, most cores are 55) with extended Prime95 sessions. IBT tends to run up to 5 degrees hotter, but it's been a while since I've used it.

I really bought the PH-TC14PE for when I upgrade to Haswell in the summer though. It's not getting pushed too hard now.
