My Antec True Power 650w PSU produces a lot of coil whine when running my 660's in SLI. I have swapped it out for a spare Corsair CX 450w and the coil whine disappears, but unfortunately it is not sufficient to support my overclocked SLI rig and reboots after a few minutes.

Can anyone recommend a 750w PSU that does not have coil whine? my budget is £80

No power supply should have coil whine. You most likely have just got unlucky and that your power supply has got a coil whine fault.

If you want a new power supply I would personally look at OCZ, XFX or seasonic as they all sell decent power supply's.

Haven't the XFX PSU's got an issue with clicking fans and aren't they made by Seasonic? Have any PSU manufacturers got a UK RMA office?

Ive had a few PSU's in my time and the only brands I wont buy now due to coil whine issues are corsair and seasonic (almost every PSU ive used of these brands have really bad coil whine).

I would go for the XFX as said above.

That is a seasonic

Don't think so. Gigabyte have/had some PSU's but they're rubbish ones

Ive heard that xfx customer service sucks, is that true?

Probably

I've just collected the XFX from OcUK, I hope I don't have to try out the XFX customer service, I'd take it back to OcUK in the first year anyway.

Thanks for the advice and the 'AprilSave' code. :)

I have the same PSU and I am sure I can hear some sort of whine under load on mine also after I put my new GFX card in, thought it was the card at 1st.
This is my 2nd PSU, the 1st one I RMA'd last year as it died on me, cost me a bloody fortune to send it off to Holland, next time, warranty or not, its going to be a new one!

I know your budget is £80, but I would recommend one of these:

YOUR BASKET
1 x BeQuiet Pure Power L8 730W '80 Plus Bronze' Modular Power Supply - With 120mm Silent Wing Fan Built in £89.99
1 x XFX 750W XXX Edition Modular '80 Plus Silver' Power Supply £83.99
Total : £185.98 (includes shipping : £10.00).

Make sure you use the code 'AprilSale' at the checkout to get a 7.5% discount.

+1 or any of the seasonic PSUs, seasonic alos do fanless PSUs which are quieter

It's pretty much impossible to buy a PSU that is guaranteed not to have coil whine.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coil_noise

In PC PSU context
or if the resonant frequency of the coil is close to the resonant frequency of the electric circuit. The effect becomes more pronounced as the signal passing through the coil increases in strength, and as it nears the resonant frequency of the coil, or as it nears the resonant frequency of the circuit.
is mostly revelent.

If your particular builds resonant frequency is close to that of the coil(s) in the PSU there is a reasonable chance it will vibrate. It can also cause coils on the mobo and graphics cards to vibrate too, but that is less common and they don't tend to be as loud.

PC PSU are likely more prone to this because they tend to have higher electric charge (ampere) than other household appliances. Most appliances using 200 w + aren't incorportaing a step-down transformer to 12+ V for most of their power usage.

So the PSUs having whine in your PC could be perfectly fine in a different one and vice versa.

It's a bit of hit and miss, buying an overspeced PSU can help, but even that isn't a sure fire bet.

Nice explanation, thanks

My first true power 650 psu went up in smoke, antec replaced it with this one that has serious coil whine. I'll never buy an antec psu again. At the time this was the most money I had ever spent on a PSU and it was the most unreliable.

tbh you get what you pay for i had a CIT psu cost me like 20 quid, lasted a year then stopped working and had to buy a new one

The antec cost me £90 and it was the most expensive psu I had ever bought and the worst psu I had ever bought.

Well if you ask OZC can you send it to their uk RMA address they will & explain the expense & thats how I got my recent RMA sorted instead of going to holland.
