at the very top of the email it says Yahoo! in there fancy lettering

Without knowing what Yahoo's policy is, I would say it looks legitimate and is probably a good idea to follow their advice.

I would suggest that you just log into your account and check the login activity directly, and if that information is shown there then change the password straight away.

I'm actually suspicious about that message as the last time I had a yahoo account breach I never received any e-mail notification.

Ignore theheyes and just login to yahoo like demonix says, NEVER click on links what you get through emails EVER, always just go to your yahoo, bank etc and log in through the proper channels, AGAIN NEVER CLICK ON ANYTHING IN EMAILS.

At what point did I suggest clicking links in unsolicited email? Please read more carefully before making such comments.

I had the exact same email last evening (it was actually for my mother's email account). My email address is tied into hers so i had the warning sent to my email account, as well as hers.

Checking the 'login activity' brought up both Chile and Russia. I have since changed her password and added her mobile number to the account so that we can verify her if something happens to it.

It's definitely legit, filthy hackers. Well, it better be, otherwise i've just given them even more information!

If your email service offers two step verification/two factor authentication then it's definitely worth the 5 minutes it takes to set up.

Seems like Yahoo is being targeted aggressively at the moment, I've had to reset 3 accounts for family members due to their Yahoo account being hacked. In fairness, though, the unbelievable weaknesses of their passwords was probably how the 'hackers' got in.

Yahoo accounts were being compromised left right and centre a while back. Nothing to do with password strength.
