I'm feeling a bit meloncholy for things past so I thought I would post a few things here which I noticed I had in my childhood but don't see now. Any one else?

A clock actually ticking (clocks rarely do that now, they are all electric)
Getting up to turn the TV over... actualy leaving the sofa
Woolworths!
Black and white TV
Tuning a TV or radio with a dial
Climbing trees in the park - can't say I've seen kids do that nowadays
Having to chat a girl up in real life, face to face, that you've never met before
Shops closed on a Sunday
Going to a butchers

I'm sure I'll think of loads more soon :) Any more?

White dog poo was all over the place when I was growing up...

'****' shops all becoming londis/costcutter. I prefered the uneven tiled floor with loads of flattened out crisp boxes as a floor.

We used to have a full blown post office, 2 of those shops, a butcher, a baker and a greengrocer. Now we have takeaways and a bookies.

Actually having to make a choice as you just walked to the shop and they didn't have what you wanted.

I miss the rose tinted atmosphere of pubs with cigarette smoke, it doesn't feel the same.

Were you born 100 years ago.

A clock actually ticking (clocks rarely do that now, they are all electric)
We still have ticking clocks
Getting up to turn the TV over... actualy leaving the sofa
Apparently the first wireless (IR) remote was made in 1955
Woolworths!
They only just closed last year
Black and white TV
Bit dated yes
Tuning a TV or radio with a dial
I still see radios with dials
Climbing trees in the park - can't say I've seen kids do that nowadays
People will still climb trees
Having to chat a girl up in real life, face to face, that you've never met
before
This still goes on
Shops closed on a Sunday
Most still are
Going to a butchers
People still go to the butchers

Don't mean to be offensive, I do this myself also, thinking that things have changed drastically from the years past, but they haven't that much, mainly the internet, pcs and smaller mobile phones, digital cameras etc, all the other devices like ipads/consoles and the like are just combinations of pc and camera tech. The internet has been around since 1993 or so and there were mobiles in the 80s, the tech is much smaller now. Wireless tech goes back to radar, just taken time to miniaturise everything. Companies like IBM are to thank for that.

The world was a lot more insular though. But the internet is the main thing that's opened everyone up. That is still a weird concept. Just rambling.

To cap it off, one of the biggest things that has changed is the availability of knowledge and the ability to interact with anyone instantaneously, you can find out virtually anything now at the click of a button, that is the major change, before that it was a struggle trying to find out anything.

Maybe I'm just a very old git but...

No, 43 years ago so I guess I'm almost there :)

Yes there are but how many of us routinely have them in our homes? Looking back at my childhood there would be several in the house but I don't have any now.

Indeed. But I stopped turning the TV over in the late 70's or early 80's. Admittedly it was with a hard wired remote control for a few years but that soon became a full RF remore.

Yup :)

Analogue tuning or digital?

Glad to hear it. Can't say I see many people climbing trees my way.

Yeah, probably does. Maybe I just read too much about internet dating. Most of the grads at work seem to use internet dating as the main way to meet people though.

Eh? Not round my way. 90% are open.

Not many around though.

Honestly I think the world that I was a child in was VASTLY different to the world that I'm bringing up my children in. Some of it better of course. Just today my kids couldn't believe that when I was a kid we didn't have the internet. Is it really less than 15 or 20 years since mass adoption of the internet started?

It's still a shock to me when I grab a patient's chart with a birth year 1990 on and they are fully grown 23 year-old adults :p

It was also amusing seeing a Fab.com e-mail spam advertising Vintage Clothing from the 90s. WTF when did the 90s become vintage?

Petrol and beer prices , I miss those!

This!

I also miss a waterpark called 'Fantaseas' (thanks TT) I think it was near Dartford and they had close because the ground tbey bulit the place on was unstable.

80's transformers cartoons. Highlight of the weekend for me growing up.

Fantaseas. That was the best place ever. Spent whole days in there...swimming to the middle island cafe to get some chips half way through.

My dad was born in 1945. He remembers watching the moon landing, buying his parents first car. He was a captain in the merchant navy when ships had no computers or GPS, it was all done by hand, including updating the charts. Over the years he has embraced most technology changes and now even has a tablet and does geocaching.

It's people from that generation that can look back at how things have changed.

Whatever did happen to white dog poo??

Wasn't it because cheap dog food used to have ground up bones in it, which had loads of calcium and essentially calcified the dog turds?

My understanding is that they're either no allowed to do that any more or people just won't buy it.
