Looking to buy my first proper TV - have been using a Hans G. 27" full HD for the last year and its worked ok, but we have no freeview HD or anything so just using catch up TV from the xbox. What I am looking for is something between 30-42" and a budget of up to about £400 (this can be stretched but ideally not). I'd like full HD so that its a bit future proofed for the next gen xbox and gives the best picture from my blu ray player. I've been mostly looking at LED panels but realistically I don't have a clue of the quality and what to look for these days!

Cheers!

Plasma > LED

at your price range, 720P is achievable. imo a 720P plasma is going to be better than a 1080P LCD, up to you whether you want to take well researched advice or not or think you know better.

i would suggest panasonic as the best plasma manufacturer with samsung second.

either the 42X50B or 42X60B if you have a but more cash.

but imo the best bang for buch tv is the 50" GT50B which is £799 at JL.

I previously worked as a researcher so I am more than happy to listen to what other people have to suggest - I'm posting here literally because there are so many different TVs out there and I'm looking for best bang for my buck!

plasma has less input lagg, better motion control and better PQ than LED.

your budget however is too low for a 1080P set.

so it's either pay more or go with 720P.

the 42" GT50B is £699 iirc. and a 42" X60B is £399.

the best bang for buck however is the 50" GT50B @ £799.

imo for your budget i would go second hand and try and buy a pansonic plasma, i just sold my 42" PZ85B for £135 to a mate. look on these forums classfied section as well as on avforums.

second hand is best bet for your budget or the X60B.

This is perfectly fine in saying, but does not fulfil the single criteria of being next gen console full resolution compatible.
In LCD at size 40 inch, he'll only get a eh5500 or so, so I agree, there isn't great choice at that range.

OP, I'd very much consider saving some extra cash to put towards a better purchase later in the year.
The 50gt50 which sonny bought and tells us about in every post is a superb TV, but it does have input lag greater than its poorer ST sibling, so if console gaming is a major consideration, it might be something you need to look at.

It is important to figure exactly what you want the TV for and to do.
Do you want smart features?
Do you want 3d?
Do you want full HD?

I just recommended a Samsung UE32F4500 on another thread for 329, but as I stated there I am not convinced it is full HD, and that detail needs to be checked, Currys say it is, it has smarts but no 3d, and I am unsure of its exact input lag figure.

That figure is rather interesting, as the AV forums people quoted it last year but seem to have forgotten what they recorded when it came to reviewing this years models.

Gaming Performance
We measured the input lag of the P50GT60 at 42ms when in Game mode, which is comparable with measurements we have made on other TVs this year and, encouragingly, lower than last year’s numbers. It seems the extra processing grunt is being put to some good use but there’s still a little room for improvement.

So I find it odd when they claimed 30ms last year in the same mode. I wonder if their test procedure has changed, or they simply got it wrong last year.

Thanks for all the replies, really helping with advice here;

Do you want smart features?
Do you want 3d?
Do you want full HD?

Don't want smart features, not worried as have an apple TV, not worried about 3d - the bluray player I have was pre-3d, ideally full HD is the resolution I'm looking for, although I guess for the price I'm looking at it might be worth looking at the Panasonic TXP42X60B.

So none of the LED/LCD's are worth looking at for PQ etc in my price range?

I did a little investigation into that 32 Samsung and I'm pretty sure its HD-ready not full HD, although there is a lot of conflicting information out there.

I wonder with Samsung wether they just say HD-Ready to cover their own behinds, I have one of the older 32" LCD's which is supposedly only 720p (exact res 1366x768) however I have my PS3 running in 1080p and it happily supports that and can run my PC through it @ 1920x1080 with no issues.

The tv will take the res but will downscale to 720p.

What about the TX-P42UT30B? Has anyone had any experience with it?

that's a old screen, its a 2011 budget model, i would rather buy a 2012 or 2013 budget model as the differences are big year on year on the budget models it's the higher end models which have little difference year on year.

basically in short plasma's have much better PQ, larger screens and cost less than LED counterparts.

the only "real" downside is their reflectiveness, but the advantages certainly outweigh the disadvantages.

to give you an example of how the models work

10B range is 1999
20B range is 2010
30B range is 2011
50B range is 2012
60B and 65B is 2013

so if the tv ends with one of the above you can tell what year it was launched in

for example my 50GT50B, the first 50 means screen size 50 inches, GT is the "model" and 50B tells you it is a 2012 panel.

the models are as below

ZT - flagship only introduced in 2013, kuro killer, best tv ever made (fact), costs £4K
VT - top of the range normal consumer model, was the flagship model up until 2013
GT - same as the VT with a slightly worse filter and contrast ratio, rumours suggest this will be discontinued after the 2013 model
ST - same as the GT with a slightly worse filter and electronics, rumours suggest it will be discontinued after the 2013 model
UT - no filter (highly reflective) and even worse electronics, discontinued after 2012 model
X - budget 720P model

imo all of the above models are great for their price range, e.g. if you can only afford an X it is the best for that budget, same goes for UT, ST, GT, VT and ZT.

Panasonic plasma's are the "rolls royce" of tv's, you cannot get better for the money. Samsung plasma's are just behind them.

LED tv's are more suitable in brightly lit rooms or when sunshine will be hitting the screen, but their PQ is considerably worse and they usually cost twice as much or more for comparable PQ

I've just bought the new model Bush 32" Slim LED Full HD 3D TV and it is fantastic!... I would not normally pick a Bush, but the manager at Argos said we could bring it back, as long as it looked unused, but there is no way in hell its going back.

Its genuine full HD and 3D for £299 and so far I can't fault it... watched The Hobbit 3D Blu Ray and Life Of Pi 3D BR and the PQ is simply epic.... stunning!..

I'm sure there are better TV's out there, but for the money I've yet to see it.

Worth considering on a lower budget, esp. if you want 3D.
