So, my mum has ordered two phones, bot £22 per month. They said they need £450 to finish processing the order. We can't call them right now, because it is 16 minutes after their phone lines closed. So, anyone else have had this happen to them?
Thanks

I'm guessing she failed the credit check? I thought it was around £150 required if you failed, seems high but she will get it back.

Just to check is there any upfront cost for the handsets they might be adding on? E.g if shes getting a couple of iPhones there is no way she will get a contract at £22pm without paying about £200 upfront for the handset.

There is no upfront, and it says this
Your network has asked for a deposit before we can process your order

After completing a credit check, the network you're trying to sign up to has asked for a deposit of £450. You'll need to pay this if you'd like us to finish processing your order.

Then yeah it sounds like she failed the credit check. They charge you a silly fee (though yours is the highest ive heard of) she will get it back though after a few months. Its just to make sure you keep up payments and don't take the handsets and do a runner leaving O2 to chase you for payment.

Hmmm. There is actually another phone on her name, there was no deposit, it was £30 a month. (Missed no bills if that makes any difference). So it is the same network, now going to be 3 phones on it.

The credit check takes all debts, overdrafts, loans, credit cards etc etc into account, so even if she already has an o2 contract and pays it on time something else may be causing her to fail. E.g missed mortgage payments or constantly being in an overdraft.

She could try other networks, or delay a couple of months and try and sort her credit score before applying again. I'm assuming the phones are not for her, maybe the people they are for could try appling themselves?

Do all networks take a deposit off you now? I've had 6 contract phones over the last 10 years on Orange. Only my Sony-Ericsson P910i back in 2005 required an up-front fee of £70 and my other 5 phones including the SGS2 required no up-front or deposit. My friend got an SGS3 about 5 months ago on O2 and he had to pay £30 up-front but no deposit.

About 8 years ago CPW wanted a £70 deposit off me for a £1 PAYG SIM card. I told them in no uncertain terms where to stuff it! Proceeded to get it for free from a shop the following weekend.

Depends on the phone, your credit history and the network. They seem to be a lot more cautious about it lately than they used to tho.

i paid £10 deposit for my S4 preorder. I've never preordered before, so i just put the deposit down to that as it's the first time I've ever had to pay a deposit.

Thanks guys. I've laid down deposits for rented rooms before, where they normally ask for 1½ month's rent. Therefore my mentality with phones is that if you have to put down a deposit for one, I would say that £50-£52 is about right considering that the average bill for the latest iPhone or Galaxy is about £35. Given that it's the first time I'm aware of phone deposits by reading this thread, I guess that Orange will go fairly easy on me. I've probably jinxed it now though :p

This is honestly so the network keeps you and you don't find a better deal ;)

Deposits are for people with bad credit histories, upfront fees vary vs cost of contract and likelyhood of the network making a return on the deal+handset combo they sold. While this may sound cold, the truth is that deposits are usually required for people who buy things likely out of their price reach like £55PCM iPhone contracts by someone unemployed.

Get her to register with Noddle.com and check your report is in good standing. Mobile networks arn't all that picky and it's likely the bigger issue is 2* new domestic (without going into details you fit the prime candidate for handset theft through identity spoofing).

O2 are pathetic. I run two companies employing over a hundred people and a couple of years ago they would not let me have two SG2's. I went down the road and bought 15 phones on Vodafone no questions asked.
