Intel Core i7 920 vs 860

I'd agree with hunting for a 2600k/2500k, IB CPUs are rare on the MM (being current gen) whereas SB CPUs do crop up from time to time, though still less frequently that 1366/1156 CPUs. Then just find yourself a decent Z68/Z77 board and job done. If you can't stretch that far, a 920/860 is still a decent CPU that should last you a while anyway.

Still rolling with my 860 but will be changing when Haswell is out. I don't need to change it out as performance wise it's still spot on. Just donating to parents.

They do run a bit hotter than the 920s. If you get an Asus board you can get the usb3/sata3 card to fit it.

You can get combined SATA6Gbps/USB 3 PCI-E cards. If you get a 4x one you can put it in the spare 8x slot on an x58 motherboard and have about 1GB/s worth of bandwidth.

trouble with add in sata3 cards is they all use poor marvell controllers,i havnt seen any with the much faster intel controllers

I have a Samsung 830 128GB, 520 Read 320 Write... or some DATA like that....

As long as its fast enough i'm ok with it. i'm not keeping this rig forever, I'm hoping the 3770K comes down enough, or to get a good deal on a good clean used one.

yh youll be fine sticking to sata2 speed ports imo

the x58 is still decent provided you get a decent oc on it,most should do 3.8-4ghz and the golden chips will do 4.2ghz,make sure you pick a good cooler as they run fairly hot

I still think a 2600/2700k is the best bang for your money out of the current crop of cpu's

I cant tell any difference at all from mine vs my 3770k,plus they run cooler

The drives get slower as they fill up, if you've got a 75% full SSD it'll only hit SATAII speeds anyway.

Not that it matters, the IOPS is the important thing and they are barely affected.

Ok, thanks.

Yeah i know what your saying, there isn't actually much if any diffrance between Ivy and Sandy, other than the DIE shrink, if i can find a new 2600K or 2700K for good money then i will go for that, i'm not sure about buying that used, when i build up my next rig i will need it to last a couple of years, Sandy Bridge is getting a bit long in the tooth, often there is no telling how many hours would be on a used SB, hence the much younger Ivy Bridge on my list, used or perhaps new if the price is right.

It might be worth sayin I had loads of trouble with my ssd on my p55 chip motherboard. I had two, one got returned because I thought it was faulty-C: would basically crash including explorer, anything on C would fail to load up. This ssd got returned but the replacement did the same. After a restart it would fail to load Windows from C. I can only assume it was a chipset or driver thing (having said that, I have zero software or drivers on my laptop...). This same CPU is now In my ivy laptop and flying like a beast.

My 860 however is absolutely fine for gaming. I can't get any higher than 3.8GHz though even with stupid volts. I certainly don't need to upgrade and I may wait till... The the refreshed 2011 cpus?
