Microsoft Research show off "Illumiroom"

Following what hilly said, if Kinect 2.0 is inbuilt to the next xbox, wont that mean another kinect unit just to run illumiroom? Guess it might stay 'proof of concept' even if the projector itself isnt that expensive (sure they mentioned it doesnt have to be high res as the effects it uses arent)

It would appear that way, the system users a kinect pointed at the TV to essentially 'get' the image, differentiate the colours and so forth and the project presents that around your TV.

The inbuild xbox Kinect (if rumoured to be true) just wouldn't be able to do this, it would be pointing the wrong way for starters!

£80 for a kinect, 300 for a projector? Maybe more. You also get the issue of placement don't you? As if the projector is behind you, you essentially are producing a self blind spot, the projector needs to be unobscured which leads to it's own placement problems.

I'll wait for more information before really deciding around this. I like the idea, it seems like a gimmic still and I have questions over the price.

So much want for this product, i really hope it comes off, might drive the price of small projectors down further.

Shame they can't mount a small LED projector in the front of the 720, then you place that as you would a projector.

This will be such an eye strain, did laugh at this though : "In the meantime, enjoy a short but impressive demonstration of the technology - created, Microsoft claims, entirely on the IllumiRoom system with no camera trickery or post-processing effects."

Yeah...

That has it's own issues though doesn't it? Connection to the TV / Monitor - You'd have to use 5-10m HDMI cables around the room to connect. You'd have sound issues (longer leads). Potential power issues also.

Maybe they will develop a kinect esq bar which incorporates a projector and the kinect in one bundle. Again, issues getting power, monitor cables to the kinect.

This is my current problem with Kinect and the new Xbox. My 360 is under my projector at the back of the room.....getting a Kinect sensor to the front would require a huge amount of cable that I'm not prepared to setup :( Roll on wireless sensor bar!

Just saw this tonight on Hexus alert - this looks incredible and the only thing that would get me back on a console tbh!! Is there any sign of this for PC? Could be better than Eyefinity/Surround.

i dont think this will be supported well, therefore pointless imo.

e.g. a developer will surely need to add additional coding to send what is out of the POV of the screen to the projector, which will take additional resources to do so.

therefore potentially on screen graphics could suffer.

also you then have to take into account it will only work well in a darkly lit room (curtains closed and lights off) which is mainly a blank canvas (lots of space, blank neautral walls with no picures/furniture in the way) and with a projector and tv setup.

therefore again the majority of homes would be unsuitable.

then take into the fact how many people could actually afford to have a setup like this? projectors aren't cheap, people are already complaining about the cost of consoles on their own never mind getting a projector on top.

so it would only be a small percentage who buy this and therefore is it worth a developers time and money in order to cater to such a small percentage of the market?

i dont think so, therefore i am not willing to invest, therefore i'm out.
