HI folks, I'm getting a transfer within my company and moving back to the UK as I'm sick of foreign places, miss the freedom, the relative lack of bureaucracy and the money in the UK. The short of it is that I may need a studio or 1 bedroom place for about 6 months in or around Egham/West Staines with good public transport links (to Runnymede roundabout end of town). I'll have about £1000 p/m for rent and utilities (approx. as my salary has yet to be discussed).

I'm not from around there so have no idea what the good or bad areas are. Can anyone from the area give some guidance on the areas I should look for and also avoid.
Thanks!

Rightmove.co.uk this is the best place to start, you should get an idea if you budget is going to stretch.

A word or warning though Egham is the most expensive place to live in the UK outside of the city of London.

Egham is quite expensive really. Avoid Englefield Green, Staines & Feltham is my advice. Try and live in Egham proper, I don't know if you'll manage it on that budget though?

Holly block a moley! Look at the rental price for Egham on Rightmove! Some of those 2 bed flats are the same rent per week as my 2 bed flat in Chelmsford is for a whole month!

You should consider Fletham or Stains.

I still can't get over the name "Stains"... Surely Stains was never a "good" word?

Anyway, just chipping in that £1000 on rent an bills is insane - I pay half that on my mortgage for 3 bedroom duplex apartment where I live!

I work in Egham and have a few colleagues who live here. It's an expensive area but it shouldn't be hard finding more affordable places given there are lots of students about renting. Places might clear up by June/July. Have a look around Englefield Green.

Feltham would be cheaper but I wouldn't want to live there personally...

I live in englefield green, personally I think it's a great area. Sure, it's expensive, but you get what you pay for. There's hardly any crime, the people are friendly, there's some great pubs and restaurants and its close enough to London that you can have good nights out. Staines and feltham also seem like decent areas to me, although perhaps I see the best of them? Either way I think you'll struggle to find a better area on the outskirts of London without spending serious money.

I'm in Staines right now. Its not actually that bad. The town centre has some decent shops and you're only 20-30mins from Waterloo. Never been to Egham but heard its a lot nicer but also a lot smaller.

Thanks for the info everyone, I did notice that it's little pricy in Egham. It's annoying not being able to have a look around myself, how nice an area is can be subjective as shown here by one person saying an area is fine and another saying it's bad. Street view certainly helps up to a point.

To be honest I'm not too fussy as I'm just looking for a cheap temporary place to stay for ~6 months where I'm not likely to get stabbed :):p that I can get to and from work on public transport. I set the limit as £1000 p/m as that way I'll be able to save as much money as possible in the time I'm be there. I'm paying £500 with bills in Prague so assuming I earn ~3x as much in the UK then paying £1000 means I'll have far more disposable income.

I've stayed in Feltham when I was having training at SAP. Seems an okayish area, not too shabby, definitely cheaper than Egham and isn't far from the office there. They have a shuttle bus service which will drop you off at the train station so if you locate around there, free travel!

Please don't live in Feltham, it's rubbish.

The area in general is ok. Egham is very nice, as is Windsor. Nothing really wrong with Staines either. I've lived in Ashford for the whole of my life (next to Egham and Staines) and have found it excellent, although, like everywhere, it's got its bad areas of course.

Ask me anything you want!

No risk of you getting stabbed round here btw, although that may not be the case in Hounslow/Feltham.

Thanks :) Looking around, as you say the Egham, Staines and Ashford areas look reasonable at least scanning around on Streetview.

I'm going to be based in our Egham office so don't really have any need to live in or near Feltham apart from the occasional visit. Which is a blessing it seems from the comments here :)

Staines and Ashford are Ok and you'll get a lot more for your money, Laleham, Shepperton and Chertsey are nice and close by. Avoid Feltham like the plague :)

Old Windsor might be cheaper, or live further out and get the train. Egham's not that big so anywhere should be walkable from the station. I worked right by the station many years ago. Good selection of shops, restaurants etc all on the high street and perfectly safe place to be.
