Quick question, I goggled this but didn't get results I was looking for :(.

On many TVs you can convert 2D sources to 3D (with varying degree's of success). I am not all that fussed about that option. However, there is also an option on my TV, to take a 3d source and convert it to 2D.

My question is, would doing that cause a loss in quality. E.g. would the 3D version of say Prometheus converted to 2D be lesser quality than just the standard 2D disc?

Some of you will maybe think why on earth does this even become a problem, it's just some times when watching 3D, I might get bored with the glasses half way through and just want to press a button rather than fanying about with discs.

Hope that was clear......... :)

Thanks

You'd be watching it at half the framerate.

Edit: or maybe not, looking around I'm not so sure now. Are 3D Blu-ray disks played at 48FPS?

You have either the option of watching in 3D or 2D, usually in the menu of the film.

Indeed, some films give you the option on the one disc, e.g. avatar.

I am talking about films, like, say Prometheus, the hobbit, Titanic etc where the 3D version is on a completely different disc(s) to the 2D one. If I use the 3D disc, and tell the TV to change it to 2D, is that just as good as watching the 2D disc it's self? TV is saying it's 1080p etc but was unsure because of how 3D works if I was loosing detail. Admitedly I cant really see any loss but was just wondering if there was an absolute answer.

I can't be bothered typing out something that wasn't that difficult to find explained in pictures. http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20063310-1/how-3d-content-works-blu-ray-vs-broadcast/

Simple answer: Blu-ray movie, No the quality should be the same as long as the original is double height stacked.

TV, Yes. There will be a quality drop because the picture is getting a compressed image and also having to make it last twice as long as as it would when playing 2D content.
