This is a big topic, but do you stereotype others, because they are poor, or have certain look, come from a certain area, have a certain accent, disposition etc.

I have done it in the past but it brings you nothing but misery, the old adage, 'What goes round comes round', applies.

Yes, but I think only the saintly couldn't stereotype ever. Judging a book by its cover is easy to do, it's whether you then remember to apply reason to your initial thoughts that makes the real difference. Or am I misreading what your thread's about?

Well you can't help doing it to some degree, for example someone dressed in cheap tatty old clothing you would assume is poor, might not be the case but that's what your brain associates with cheap tatty old clothing.

Anyone on benefits has been on the Jeremy Kyle show, all of the poor are dopey and uneducated, all asians rapists blacks criminals whites colonials chinese are all mathematicians.

Scousers will put your car on bricks.

Posh is the only way.*

*None of this may be serious

I'm human, of course I do! Typically only at work with some of the customers you get in, it's not right to say but for the most part you can look at someone and know exactly how it will pan out for the rest of the interaction.

I would however like to think that I can leave my preconceptions alone once they have been shattered and do on a personal level just try and deal with the person not my stereotypical image of them.

You personally stopping stereotyping others, won't stop other people doing it.

Besides it's a social shorthand, I could refer to "people of a European country known for travelling, a subset of which have a number of social problems directly attribitable to intermittent education and job prospects"

or I could just refer to thieving ****** :p

I always do it. Don't see how it always brings misery, I have my perceptions but I don't let that stop me from seeing who a person really is, then i'll just think oh so they're not who I thought.

anyone who doesn't stereotype to some extent is probably only kidding themselves

If you saw a middle aged couple walking towards you down an an alley would you be more or less on your guard* than if it was a couple of rough looking lads in hoodies.

I'm not saying that people should make assumptions of people based on the fact they have a regional accent or come from a particular racial group... that would be a bit naive and narrow minded. But stereotypes encompass more than that and the way that people choose to present themselves or inevitably end up presenting themselves as a result of their lifestyle does give some indications about them as a person.

all the time, and I love it,

it helps me make sense of a mad world,

from polish builders to black guys in hoody's, from Hipsters to gay guys in chinos and string vests ;)

If it's on Emmerdale Farm then it must be true. :p

:eek::eek:

I have a stereotype image of Kwerk.

They are stereotypes for a reason, the majority of time they are correct.

Fat people are lazy.

Americans are loud.

Hipsters are annoying.

I stereotype everyone, but I wouldn't hold someone by them. I'll give someone the chance to prove me wrong but as above, a lot are correct.
