Just a little car tax confusion going on since I got my car a few weeks ago.

11/4/13 - bought car, dealer sent off log book and gave me the little green slip
23/4/13 - DVLA sent an incorrectly named V5C log book
24/4/13 - Sent off correction page for a V5C log book
26/4/13 - DVLA sent an incorrectly named tax reminder form V11
01/05/13 - Nothing received back from DVLA yet

Car tax expired last night. I have the little green slip, MOT and insurance documents and can go to a little post office today at lunchtime to get the car taxed. Will I be able to get the car taxed or do I need to fill out form V10 also seeing as I don't have a correctly named V5C log book?

On the incorrectly named V5C, was your address right?

If so, tax online, taxdisc will come to the correct address.

If not, and assuming the green slip hasn't been previously stamped by a post office or DVLA office, use that at a post office.

They got the name wrong but the address correct. So I could use the reminder then even though the name is wrong.

I can't do it online as it will take 5 days to get the disc and it's already out by 1 day. Need to go PO today

AFAIK as long as your car is actually taxed and paid for it's not an issue. Technically it is an offence not to display your tax disc, but I doubt you'd have a problem once you explain that the tax disc is on the way.

Unless you're being a tool, if the police were to stop you in the intervening few days between now and receiving your tax disc it wouldn't be an issue. And let's face it...the police won't stop you unless you ARE being a tool as the car will not cause any flags with ANPR systems as they only check reg number against tax status, not looking for the actual tax disc in the window.

FYI, I've left online car tax application to the last day and applied and paid the night that the tax ran out for the last 3 years and I've not had any problems.

The government aren't getting my money off me a day before they need to!

Yeah obviously for next time I won't have an issue as I will have all the correct details on my V5C. However this was all delayed because someone at DVLA or the dealer filled out the name wrong. Just hope if I do apply online today it accepts I am out by 1 day.

I love how this always get perceived wrong. The 5 days grace only applies if you buy the tax BEFORE it runs out. If it was ordered online today you won't get the 5 days grace.

Yeah, my father-in-law keeps insisting that he can drive the vehicle for 5 days after his tax has expired, before the police will do anything.

I keep telling him that the tax HAS to be renewed before the old one expires and you then get 5 days grace in case you haven't received it in time or forget to put it in.
