Redundancy - Advice needed.

Hey guys,

Up until recently I've been working at Ladbrokes part time as a cashier to supplement my uni income. However, since I got back to London after the summer I have been trying (without any success) to get hours around London. The supervisor dealing with the area has been frankly terrible - doesn't respond to texts or voicemails, and has not contacted me at all after a brief stint.

My supervisor in Norwich messaged me about a week ago stating that my contract will expire soon, but that he will be contacting the supervisor down here with regards to a full contract transfer, and that he would be getting back to me soon.

However, I received a text from him yesterday stating:

"Hi Ryan. I have spoken to xxxx and she says she has no vacancies at the moment. You will be receiving a letter together with all norwich city ground staff stating that redundancy will take effect from 12th May which is the date on which the shop closes. There are no shop vacancies in Norwich so all staff will be redundant"

And that's it. No further responses to texts asking about what on earth is going on. I've been with the company for a little under 3 years, but I'm really not clued up on how redundancy like this works. The manner in which I've been dealt with seems a tad unprofessional, and frankly I'm quite upset as this has left me without a job when just last week I was promised hours.

So, where do I stand and what can I do?

The basics for redundancy are : You need to have worked for a company for at least 2 years then you get

half a week’s pay for each full year you were under 22
1 week’s pay for each full year you were 22 or older, but under 41
1 and half week’s pay for each full year you were 41 or older

The company should pay the redundancy pay with your last payment, but if the company you worked for say went bust, you can claim your redundancy from the Government.

Make sure you get any unused accrued holiday entitlement paid too.
 
Check the edit :- Make sure you get paid for any Hol Pay outstanding too :)

Or if you have taken it all, don't say anything! :p
 
When I was at Uni I cleaned offices. 8 quid an hour, two hours an evening. Offices are easy to clean and provided its a key job, you can finish in an hour or so if you work hard and then shoot off to the pub. I earnt more than my mates who wee coming back from working in bars at 3 in the morning knackered and miserable.
 

That's interesting. I thought the maximum statutory redundancy pay was 12 weeks regardless whether years of service exceeded 12? Did they update the legislation recently or has this always been the case?

EDIT - Apparently length of service is capped at 20 years, weekly pay at £450 and total redundancy at £13,500. Statutory maximums are pretty abysmal :(

Offices are easy to clean and provided its a key job, you can finish in an hour or so if you work hard and then shoot off to the pub. I earnt more than my mates who wee coming back from working in bars at 3 in the morning knackered and miserable.

That sounds good to be fair, may have to look into it :)

As someone who has had the misfortune to deal with cleaning companies and trying to get them to provide the service they were supposed to quote to provide I can tell you that people willing to work a couple of hours a day, be reliable and put a bit of effort in are like gold dust to these companies.

They typically resort to middle age to older aged women who don't want to do the work, think it should be well above minimum wage and think standing talking for 50% of the time about east enders is working hard, since this is all they normally manage to recruit.

We've had fun and games with cleaning companies :| on top of what I posted about previously (stealing laptops, etc.) the latest one I've worked out are charging us full price for i.e. brand name hand soaps but refilling with cheap (very cheap) substitutes much of the time and pocketing the difference.
 
That's rough. Our team were given a month's extra pay and double commission (about£4k all in) after working there for 8 months. That was because they needed us to work an extra month (or else lose £1m revenue).

Is there no way you can TUPE within the company?
