As per title, family is looking to replace their dying car, and would like some suggestions.

Budget is minimal, as this is a purchase out of necessity (other one just had its timing belt go..), so around £5k ish.

7 seats would be good. Efficiency would be a plus but not the end of the world. (20-30k miles a year).

Thanks.

No they are all tosh, the Galaxy is the best but quite big and be quite old, the MK1 Zafira is miles better than the MK2 the MK2 is a big pile of plastic degenerating poorly made rubbish the rest is just throw away consumable tat.

renault grande scenic. we bought a normal scenic for the the mrs two years ago, have had no majot trpubkes and the practability of it is ace. looked at the zafira but they cost too much.

and the Zafira B is much better than Zafira A,

It's better looking more modern and nicer to drive but the general quality is so much lower, the A we had just got old till we sold it, the B we had got old and left bits behind everywhere, I had a box of plastic trim from inside and under the engine bay that just fell off and wouldn't go back together again. The stupid aircraft handbrake fell to pieces, the wiring to the back doors are too short so pull and stretch every time you open them till they stretch and break.

The electronic boot randomly stopped working, the lights all blew when one went, the dash just buzzed and rattled all the time, they eat tyres and brakes.

The A was just better built.

Yup Grand Scenic 130 diesel here, been awesome for 5 years, we bought it new for 12k, bargain, done 80k in so far, only replaced typical consumables brakes/tyres outside of regular servicing, and only failure has been pedal rubbers worn out quick and a bush on a wiper arm. Often packed to the brim and pulls a caravan ( don't burn me :) )

Understand that the later models 08 onwards that I have are better than early ones, only bad thing I will say is that despite running same chassis as Megane R26 there is no fun to be had behind the wheel of it as it has jelly for suspension, floats over speed bumps and rubbish british roads though, does its job of carting kids and crap about really well, long service interval and cheap to run.

Bought it as it was the cheapest new family diesel I could get my hands on and wasn't sure on it, would buy one again in a heartbeat.

My dad has a zafira as a second car probably 6yr old, and it's a great cheap practical thing for what it is, my mates mum has a galaxy and swears by it, I probably prefer the galaxy but it you want a no frills beater I don't think you'll go too far wrong with either as long as they are decent examples.

Zafira is the most popular budget 7 seater car. There are also Kia Sedona, Fiat Doblo Family Edition ect.
