After the demise of the wife's Megane 1.9DCi to turbo failure  we are currently on the lookout for a replacement, with a little one on the way it needs to be of reasonable size, she does 350-450miles a week so must be a diesel, as the title says the VW Golf GT TDI 140 in 5 door has caught our eye and meets our criteria.

Having never owned a VW what are they like to live with? mpg figures look decent, servicing seems reasonable? build quality? anything to look out for?

Secondly Mk5 or Mk6? whats the differance? the 6 is a little nicer on the eye externally, whereas the interior seems identical?

Thanks
J

I believe the MK6 is based on the MK5 platform (albeit slightly modified).

Build quality is decent on both though I think the interior is supposed to be better quality in the MK6 compared to the MK5. They will both be relatively comfy and offer decent amounts of space all round. As some say...a Golf is generally a safe bet for most people :)

If it's going to be a mile muncher I'd try and avoid the "GT" markup and get a well specced SE if you can find one in Mk 6 form. The 6 is widely accepted to be far better than the 5 (which I don't think has dated all too well) even if it just an evolution rather than revolution from 5->6. If you see them both in the flesh you'll see that the 6's interior is far classier than the 5.

The "normal" MK5's do look quite dated now, but the GT, GTI, R32 styling I think all still look quite smart/modern. The change in front grille certainly helps :)

Fair enough - which brings me onto my next epically contradictory recommendation...get a mint Mk5 GT 170. It will be far cheaper than a Mk6 GTD and the 140 doesn't live up to the GT moniker and/or styling.

Used to have a MK5 GT TDI 140 and loved it, decent build quality and reliable through the PD TDI engines are a bit rough

I had a mk5 GTTDi 170 for 18 months and absolutely loved it. 0-60 times were nothing to shout home about but it had plenty of torque to make overtaking in any gear a breeze and economy was around 47mpg on a mix of motorway and A roads.

Mine was one of the earlier 56 plate GTs so had the body-coloured front grille section behind the number plate, and the silver headlights, but I swapped them out for the later ones and it makes the front end look so much better. The later models also has tinted rear windows.

The 170 has a DPF whereas the 140 doesn't. Other things to watch out for are problems with injectors (VW issued a recall on many of the 170s..I got all mine replaced for free) and so the ABS pump is another weak point, although once again VW will often cover the replacement of it under a goodwill scheme.

I often still wish I had mine as it was a solid car which was a pleasure to drive. I'd certainly buy another one, and it would probably be a mk5 as I didn't like the look of the mk6 styling.
