Alcatraz was terrible. Terrible.
 
depends what they like really.....

if they like wisecracking westerny scifi - Firefly

if they want indepth, hardcore with multithreading plots scifi then - BSG

if they want a more sedate pace with political drama shenanigans - then West Wing

if they want crazy bite your fingernails to the bone tension that ramps up every second, feeling like they are in the tv helping, screaming at the tv, constantly fighting against impossible odds and mad mad situations that would break lesser men and more plot twists, deception, double crossing than you will know what to do with....a series that will become a part of your life and your best bud.....dammit! you need Jack Bauer - 24 -

Red Dwarf
ER

Probably my two favourite shows of all time.

If you want a quick laugh then Coupling is also awesome.
 
a lot of people here clearly don't know the meaning of the word single. :p

as i don't have (proper) internet or sky i don't get to watch much at all. the only thing on normal telly i make a point of watching is NCIS.
 
Game of thrones, have actually recommended it to a few people, those who bothered love it.
