Me vs The Mrs. Range Rover 4.2 SC vs Lexus RX350.

Lexus is hardly a budget car brand is it...

It's a Toyota in drag.
My Honda certainly is a budget brand.

Anyway, what does it matter if someone wants something nice? We don't all have to drive around in a Mondeo you know.

Why would he want a Discovery when the Range Rover exists and he wishes to buy a luxury SUV?

A luxury SUV that is 10 years old with 100k+ miles on the clock makes me wonder if it is a realistic/practical wish that's all...

You could get a far newer/nicer condition/mileage vehicle for that budget was my immediate thought, just not a Range Rover.

Lordrobs, yeah I did get annoyed with the A8 and 750i but those were from main dealers and under warranty. I was more frustrated by the lack of care by the dealer than the fact that they had niggles. The A8 was junk though. Friday afternoon car I think.

I remember now, I also remember the Lexus connection because you had a GS?

It sounds like you really want the RR so no matter how reliable the Lexus is and no matter how good the dealership are you're not going to get the James May fizzy inside feeling from it.

Get it bought ;)

What's wrong with a Mondeo?

I wouldn't call Honda a budget brand either tbh but whatever.

Mentioning the word snobbery seems to have set you off, but it's definitely applicable in this thread.

Just wondering if you guys have considered the BMW & Audi options? I assume you have but interested to why you considered the above 2 over the BMW & Audi offerings?

How bizarre. The word snobbery set me off because you accused me of being a snob because of my choice of car.

My question to you though is why not a Range Rover? They are pretty cheap to buy these days. They handle the miles really really well and I can keep one running reasonably inexpensively. Sure, it will generate the odd £2k or £3k bill from time to time but then anything big will.

I suppose I could buy a Mondeo or an Insignia or a C-Max from a main dealer. It will be reliable but also boring. It will also devalue fast. And this is the key.

I like older, prestige vehicles as they lose money slowly as the bulk of the depreciation has already happened.

BMW X5s seem to hold their value really, really well and for my budget I'd be looking at an older model that's based on the E39. Not a bad thing per se, but we're talking a car that's running on a design from 1996.
The Q7 is a bit meh. A6 interior but mahooooosive on the outside. I drove one for a few days when I had my A8 in being fixed (again) and didn't like it.

Based on your logic why buy any older car if you can get a different brand/vehicle which is newer and cheaper.

Anyway OP it looks like you have a RR itch that needs scratching. Go for it!

He could indeed buy a newer car, with a lower number on the EEPROM. The same goes for every car purchase until you end up with a brand new Dacia or something.

Nicer condition? I doubt it, of course some Range Rovers will be in bad condition, but Rilot will choose one in excellent condition, which his budget affords him the luxury to do.

You get what you pay for, if he wants a newer reg date and a lower mileage figure then it will be a lesser lower quality vehicle.

LR weren't very adventurous with the colour selection for the Range Rover were they? Seems to be a choice of silver, grey or black ;)

I'm sure I've seen a nice dark red + cream leather interior combo in the past.. Looked fantastic.

Range Rover over any of other boring reliable rubbish mentioned so far. Why not have a car you'll actually remember.

I appreciate that line of thought, but there has to be a line drawn somewhere and for the age and mileage that he's considering it would be a no go for me. The same goes in the other direction too, I haven't suggested that he goes out and buys a Kia instead have I? :)

I understand that my opinion isn't wanted, but then again, why bother posting here if he's just going to ignore everything he doesn't want to hear and just buy the battered old Range Rover anyway? :p

Everyone I know views Lexus as a Luxury brand, and some even would rank Lexus them above BMW/Audi/Mercedes (which are above Honda/VW which are above Ford/Vauxhall etc.) because of the perceived luxury and exclusivity of a Lexus compared with a BMW.

But Joe Bloggs down the pub who thinks he knows about cars would tell you that Jaguar is a posh Ford, Range Rover is a posh Land Rover which is a farmers car, Lexus is a posh Toyota, Audi is a posh VW, etc. Because, like, the badge is the only difference .

I'm sorry since when did mileage equate to condition? I imagine there are plenty of high mileage examples that have lived most of their life on the motorway and as such are in pretty good condition. On top of that 100k miles in 7 years is not exactly moon mileage at just over 14k a year.

Fair enough your line would be drawn at that age and mileage but Rilot can obviously afford the running costs and any potential issues it may throw up which would be the only issue for anyone looking at these cars.

Quite.
I'd rather have a tidy, maintained at no expense, top of the line trim level, 10 year old car on 150,000 miles than a tatty, only used to take the kids to school, only serviced when something breaks, 3 year old, 50,000 mile car.

I really don't get in the UK the hang-up about 100,000 miles. I mean, if we used km would the same hang up exist about 100,000km? Or how about 160,934km?
It's just wierd. Not that I'm complaining because I can get a really, really nice car with years of life left in it for peanuts because of it.

I would go for the RR, again. I wouldn't need to be the SC though, a v8 vogue would be fine.

Afaik MY2005 was the last year with the BMW engine, and it had the upgraded DVD NAV unit, you can spot by the shark fin antennae. MY2006 had the jag engine and some slightly face lifted grilles and lights.

If you wanted jap reliability with a bit more comfort and power, I would look at land cruisers, Lexus LX, Infiniti FX etc.. Not that they will deliver anything like the ownership experience of the RR though ;)
.

Oh, no Infiniti QX56 either then.. (a tarted up Nissan Patrol really)

There are a good few decent fast V8 SUVs out there which you don't seem to have available, so the answer must be a RR :)

My next purchase is going to have to be a SUV, the choice would be between RR, RR Sport, ML63 or a Cayenne. With a Grand Cherokee SRT8 as a wild card. I drove an FX50s today, nice place to be for 4 people and fast as you-know-what, I just cant get over the ugly appearance and the cheapish displays on the dash and Nav.. those in my GTI look better.

If it helps, my missus absolutely loved our '04 HSE, and she isn't at all into cars. She hasnt raved about anything I had before or since.

Dont go for a RRSport, although they look OK from the outside, they are similar to a Disco on the inside :(
