After recently fitting my ssd and a new video card it was running good. Today I was playing gta tbogt just finished moding my save game. So was playing for about two minuets and the controls started going funny and the graphics. then the pc turned its self off. So turned it back on and straight away BANG and flash/sparks from the psu and the master fuse for the house trips. Prier to this I could smell a strange electrical smell.

I just hope it hasn't taken out any other components.

I will open the psu tomorrow and see what's happened.

P5NE-sli @ 1522ghz
Q6600 2.4ghz @ 3.4ghz
8gb ram not sure on the make
X2 gtx 280 in sli
Psu 1050w not sure on the make. Its not a named one.

Am at work on nights I'll find out the make tomorrow.

Mine went the other day as well but it was a named and very highly rated one which with all it's safety features did not damage any of my components. Replaced it swiftly and now back in the game again :). Waiting on a RMA for my broken one now too which was quickly sorted.

The die bit is somewhat nonsense

Not really, an 800W PSU will usually have a main 400V capacitor @ around 470uF, touch the contacts on one of them you have about 40 Joules of energy going through you (remember Caps want to discharge as fast as possible).

Considering a defibrillator delivers 200 Joules of instantaneous energy, you are walking on dangerous territory especially if you have an undiagnosed heart condition, or end up unconscious swallowing your tongue.

Now think how much bigger a +1000W PSU would have.

Also I had an xbox 1 with a 200V - 200ish uF capacitor, that shorted out on the casing (read dropped) before I knew about these things, the sparks flew on that one and there was a hell of a bang.

I just want to reassure you that it probably hasn't affected other components, when something goes "bang" the sudden surge of power won't affect other components aslong as they have inbuilt capacitors (which most do nowadays), surges of electricity from PSU's going bang are seriously Millie second events. Especially if you turned it on, it went bang and shutdown.

that's making me think twice I only want to take the top cover off but could a spark jump if I'm near it with cover off?

Later i will get pics of the make and possible insides if dare lol.
