Ello Peeps,

Going blind soon so gonna blow a couple of gran on a smart TV while I can still see it. Lokking at the Panasonic DT65B and Samsung F8000 in 55" versions. I saw the Samsung in the shop that rhymes with ez curled and looked good but couldn't really see that well in a showroom. They never had the Panasonic to look at. I've phoned a couple of places and they say the F8000 is a lot better quality picture than the Panasonic. The F8000 is more expensive. Is there a big diffence between the two?

Ta guys:)

Just came back from Currys, the F8000 looks stunning, superb display!

They only had one Panasonic plasma that I could find, I don't think the feed it had was very good as the picture quality was very average. So hardly a fair comparison.

Only mentioning the plasma as many will say get that instead of LED.

If LED is where you want to go hard to go wrong with the Samsung model.

A word of warning. I went through 3 65" Samsung LED's that all suffered from very noticeable vertical banding. From what I read on AVForums the 55" suffers from this as well although only around 50% of sets. I've yet to speak to a 65" owner who doesn't have banding. I eventually swapped for a 64" Plasma and it is amazing.

you should never use a plasma with a pc imo, even little use causes bad IR, I know because my GT50B is connected to my pc, and i switch to the monitor when i am not watching movies / tv shows, it got some IR when I was using chrome (bookmarks and menu bars) for a couple of hours which took over a day to get away.

i now only use the plasma for video content when connected to the pc.

imo you should just buy a plasma for tv and movie use and a monitor for pc use.

you can still hook up the plasma to the pc and just switch outputs when watching movies, this is what I do.

I have a 50" GT50B and a NEC S-IPS 20WGX2 Pro setup, GT50 is connected to freeview HD, PS3 and PC, the monitor to just the PC. i use the monitor for everything apart from shows and movies, when i switch the output to the plasma, it takes literally 5 seconds to do. i right click on desktop, screen resolution then on the pull down menu i select either show only desktop on monitor 1 or show only desktop on monitor 2. 1 = plasma and 2 = monitor.

by buying plasma you will save yourself over £1000, get better PQ, better motion handling, less input lagg, better blacks.

you can then use some of the £1000+ you saved and then buy a monitor for pc use.

imo this would be the most sensible route. plus depending on how much you spend on the monitor, you will have enough money left over to spend on a pretty decent sound system.

This would be a great idea but I would need a very big monitor which wouls cost a lot and I wouldn't have space for both.

why would you need a big monitor? why not just have it closer to your face?

i have my setup in the bedroom, which probably has the most furniture of any room in the house and yet i still have space for a 50" tv and a 20" monitor.

the tv is 6-8 feet away wheres the monitor is 2 feet away.

When I said I was going blind, I mean I have little sight now and will have none soon. I have and oldis sony bravia 55" as my monitor now and sit right close and I still need a magnifier thing to read text.

I am metalmackeys brother.
I dont think there is a monitor big enough that would suit him as his eyesight really is that bad.
And saving any money for a decent sound system really isnt nessecary as he has a onkyo 818 with a decent £1000 set of speakers(which i cant remember the name of)
:)

Monitor Audio BX2 5.1 they are bruv.

Maybe I should upgrade them instead LOL.

is there any cure for your eyesight? sounds horrible, i take it you have seen a few specialists? because i wouldn't take the word of just one doctor.

sounds like you need an eye transplant tbh more than a tv.

you ever thought about a projector?

Been seeing docs since I was a iccle baby LOL. I have cerebral Palsy too and theres nowt they can do. I've had eye operations for glaucomba but none have helped.

I guess the second best thing to an eye transplant would be a good hooker for a month:D

Seriously I'm ok with it and often take the pee out of myself, ask my bro LOL.

based on the fact you use the tv as a monitor and close to your face, buy the biggest LCD you can afford. dont go for a top of the range one if you can avoid it an 8 series or 9 series samsung's high quality picture would be wasted on someone with your eyesight.

buy a 6 series instead

or

but imo for similar money to the top of the range you should be able to get this

http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/tv-audio-video/television/led-tv/UE65F6400AKXXU

which is 65", but bigger screen rather than better PQ

google UE65F6400 and you should see it for £2275 for a 65" screen
