Virgin Media Discussion Thread

does anyone know what's a wideband cable is?

am asking because one of the VM forum admin as checked my connect due to i'm having spiky / very slow speed (1-40Mb~) at peak time. he said:

Hi gareth170,

Dean seems to have forgotten to check the wideband cables, not just upstream and downstream channels. Upstream wise we are looking ok, downstream wise utilisation is creeping up but has not breached KPI's yet so that can't be raised at this time. I can raise one of the 4 wideband cables to networks as this has breached KPI's. Bump this thread in the next day or 2 for a fault reference number and an estimated fix time.

We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.
Kind regards,

Well as much as i loved the 100mb connection, ive just downgraded to 30mb to save money, not really saving a lot by doing this £18 but its a start, were paying over £140 a month according to the guy on the phone so im now looking to change everything with the BB being the first to suffer :(

Only ever really used it to download games from steam, dont do much downloading of anything these days and the 1mb up well not going to see that difference in normal use i dont think.

Edit scrap that price of 140, its actually £171...holy mother of god, some serious recalculations are in order, been with 'virgin' since blueyonder never changed so could use that maybe lol

Was 100mb (now 30), TV xl + movies and sports, phone normal, 1 tivo box and 2 normal boxes

We were paying £51 for the 100mb internet aswell...something aint right...need to spend a good few hours on the phone to them i think.

Well it was 49.25 for the internet so not a clue what happened, Anyway was on the phone to them and got it all down to 129.30 thats the best they can do so im more happy, got passed around like a yoyo, spoken to 7 different people lol.

you do know the VIP package which is basically the best of everything 100MB with free upgrade to 120MB, the XXL phone package with free landline calls, etc. XXL tv packagle plus movies and sports, etc.

for new customers is around £60-£80 per month.

the fact your happy to pay double this is astonishing and for 30MB which is the bottom package.

personally i would have cancelled the contract, then signed back up in my partner's name citing that you had moved out due to a separation.

The 30mb part, was what i did to start with, to drop the price of what we were paying as i had no idea it was that expensive to be honest, i didnt take much notice, been with virgin for almost 13 years now since they were blueyonder so ive trusted them, was originaly on 100mb then downgraded to 30mb as that is what i was only told i could do, then after more phone calls its all back to normal and the same as before so 100mb net but everything at 129.30 instead of 171 - i know this isnt the best place to discuss this but was the best place to get people in the know about VM etc for advice.

Tomorrow im ringing them again to see exactly what im paying for as i cant see the individual prices on the myvirgin site and also to get some compensation or further discount for us paying over the odds.

Edit - Infact just checked the site, says total package under bills as 166.78, this is starting to annoy me now hahaha gonna be a long day tomorrow.

like i said above, your much better off cancelling your current contract.

VM customer service sales people have absolutely no power.

I have spent time in the past arguing to them that I am paying double what a new customer pays, they just say when you were a new customer, you would have been on a similar deal, yes 15 years ago, now i want a good deal now.

The only way to get a good deal is to leave them and re-join.

VM had a deal in March where it was 50% off everything for 12 months i believe for new customers only.

The VIP package which I have been offered for £130 ish a month worked out at £55 a month for new customers when you take into account, they put £75 into your account as credit (new customers only) and you can go through quidco for an additional £75 off or thereabouts (new customers only).

seriously phoning them is going to be a waste of time, just tell them to cancel it and re-join under a partner's name or someone else's name is possible.

I have 2 accounts currently and one is in my grandad's name and the other in my dad's name.

look at this

http://store.virginmedia.com/bundles/vip.html

new customers pay £50 a month for the TOP PACKAGE, it doesnt get any better package wise.

also Quidco are currently offering £161.50 cashback

http://www.quidco.com/virgin-media/

you would have to be mental not to sign up as a new customer.

You will be getting everything for £50 a month and £161.50 cashback on top as well as Special Online Credit taken off your bill £50.00, off your first bill.

So cashback is £211.50 altogether atm, as well as the VIP package for £50 a month.

I can bet you 1 million pound there is no way VM customer service will give you the same deal as an existing customer or a better one.

That doesn't sound right.
the VIP collection is 100mb, tv XL with sports and movies, unlimited phone (landline + mobiles + 0845/0870 numbers) + cheaper international calls, 1 tivo box and 1 normal box.

and thats normally £99 + 14.99 for line rental.

It might be better to just cancel everything and sign up for a new VIP collection (and get the 50% for 6 months off as well)

My 100mb collection has stabilised now. When ever I check my speed its 97mb+.

My graphs look a lot better too and no dropped packets for a while

update:

i contacted VM yesterday and they said an engineer as been booked to do the cables outside on 9th may 2013. so im not sure what cables, if it's the wideband cable and downstream cable or just one of them.. hopefully it's sorted in 2 days then

well they've canceled the 09/05 one.

Hi gareth170,

High utilisation has been reported on part of your downstream network segment, the fault reference for this is F002458002 and currently has an estimated fix date for 05/06.
Kind Regards,

so we called VM because yesterday we got told it'll be fixed on 9/5. so after getting angry with them we asked to talk to the manager, so he called us and we explained everything to him and he basically said it will get done on 5/6, so he gave us another £15 on top of the £12.50 and he said if it's not fixed on 5/6, they'll give us another £15 + £12.50 next month

Any news on the upload doubling yet. Im still on 60/3 and i wouldnt mind the upload doubled to 6mb up. Or has that upgrade been totally removed from what VM are doing now?

Also any news on streaming buffering. I tried using a opendns to bypass virigins dns which i think was the culprit but im not sure its done much tbh. It helped i think initially but then ive discovered new stuff on utube can buffer somewhat still even on low 260 or 360.
