GTX 670 FTW unstable frame rate

I just recently upgraded my GPU from a gtx 470 to an 670 gtx FTW. i have been experiencing some serious issues regarding unstable frame rates no matter what settings i use on games. Even with older games such as Postal 2 the frame rate fluctuates all over the place from 130fps and at times drops down to 50fps. when i played old games with the 470 i never experienced any issues apart from newer games such as assassins creed 3 and tomb raider thus the upgrade.

when i played postal 2 with the 470 i always had a consistent 120fps and doom 3 also ran at a consistent 60fps. now with this newer card i never have a steady frame rate.

I have ran precision x and noticed that on these games the gpu usage never runs over 42%. i have spent the past 2 days reading many forums about this issue. i tried many different settings and configurations on Nvida control panel and i still have this same issue.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this problem? i am seriously considering returning the GPU and reinstalling my 470gtx

and before anyone suggests upgrading the CPU i really don't think that's the issue as the frame rate was more stable with the 470gtx

my specs:

GA H55M-UD2H motherboard
Intel core i3 530 @2.9ghz over-clocked to 3.6ghz
12gb ram 1600mhz
gtx 670ftw 1006mhz stock speed over-clocked to 1200mhz
600 watt power supply

You could try restoring defaults in the Manage 3D Settings tab in the NV CP, or reinstalling the graphics drivers.

Also/or you could try deleting (or moving) the configuration files for the games and then letting the games recreate them.

i have a 4.4ghz 3570k which manages to limit my hd 7950 (similar to your gpu in performance) in a few places (mostly single-threaded or heavily cpu-dependant games/scenes). at a guess your cpu is somewhat holding your gpu back. have you checked to see what cpu usage is like in those games?

edit: sorry just read the bit about the gtx 470

tried that and still no luck :( i just removed the configuration file on one of the older games and left the graphics setting on default configuration and res. I still have the same issues. the frame stars at 230 frames and then jumps between 54-72 fps. tbh i think this card sucks i am going to replace it back with the 470 and then we can see if it is the card or the CPU

i just tested my 670 ftw with borderlands 1 and it runs at a stable 62fps with everything max apart from dynamic shadows but when i turn that on the fps drops to a dramatic 45fps. surely the 670 can do much better???

You are probably CPU bottlenecked. I don't think Boderlands 2 is particulalry demanding game.

Nvidia have the 670 down as able to max the game out at 1920x1200 no problems.

I have a 670 and when i run certain games i get low gpu usage but a constant 60fps unless its like farcry 3 with everything turned up then i get 50+ fps,

When vsynch is disabled in nv control panel and in game i get full 100% GPU usage whether its 50 fps or 150 fps.

I can only suggest checking temps of card and make sure its not throttling down by looking at GPU core frequency to make sure its at or above 1006mhz ( depending on card clock)

Also Antialiasing Transarency in NV control panel can hurt performance if its set to Super Sample x2 / x4 / x8 , i leave mine on multisample.

SOme of factory oc-ed cards suffer for GPU throttling. Try to lower GPU frequency for about 100-150 MHz as well as memory speed and see if it is any difference in gaming then.

I do not get this problem if I run one of my 670 FTW cards. I'm using a 2500k at 4.6ghz. If you have tried re-installing the drivers using the fresh install option then I would say try a complete re-install. If you have a spare drive try a fresh windows install on that and see how that works.

i have tried many different settings, still no luck :( i only want to play games on a steady 60fps.

i have tried lowering the clock speed to 600mhz
adjusting ingame settings
adjusting ncp settings
changed to prefer maximum performance
turned off Antialiasing Transarency
i have even downclocked my cpu and reflashed my mb bios...

still no luck :(

i don't understand...i get steady fps on games like farcry 2, and battlefield 2 on max settings but when i am trying to play games that aren't really graphically demanding like left for dead the fps throttles all over the place. even when i set the frame rate target to 60fps...anyway i just saw a used i7-870 for £80 with an unused heat sink and fan. i am going to order it and give it a try. in the mean time i am going to re-insert my 470 and see if i get stable fps.

Really sounds like dynamic clocks kicking in, what are the clocks at when you monitor thrm in AB ?

i just had a quick play through of Sonic the hedgehog fan remix on max settings, EVGA Precision x on default and nvcp on prefer max performance. the fps throttles between 52-74fps.

results of hardware monitor:

power stayed at 31% throughout
gpu clock mhz 1006 throughout
memory clock 3105 throughout
gpu tem 40c throughout
gpu usage throttled between 1-39%
memory usage was 295-501

if the dynamic clocks are clicking in how do i disable them???

1006 is stock mine auto clock up to 1195 ish under normal use. The lowest I have seen them drop to is 1145. Have you tried setting the power target slider in Precision all the way to the right and leave everything else at stock, Is your case cooling any good ?

Download and run the Heaven Valley benchmark with just the power slider all the way up. Sonic is not really a gpu hog.
