OK, so there are exceptions for boxer engines and MX-5s and some actually sound decent if not ridiculously loud, but how can anyone actually enjoy the stupid trombone like sound of a Corsa or any other rubbish little shopping cart with an exhaust the size of a rocket launcher? It doesn't sound good, it just sounds rubbish, but louder.

I know it's only "other people" that do this, but surely there must be someone here who has done this to their own car. It's reasonably mild today, so I have the window open, and the sheer frequency of stupid trombone cars means that there must be some here who are guilty.

C'mon, justify yourselves. Do you think your car sounds good like that? Do you think it sounds good enough that I have to hear it 25m away through double glazing and a pair of earplugs, while I'm trying to sleep? Do you listen to a lot of trombone solos?

years back i put a practically unsilenced exhaust on my golf. i wanted it to sound louder and i wanted more power and the OE system weighs a ton.

an OMP group N system came up at a silly cheap price but it was stupidly loud. i ran it that way for 9 months and probably 10k miles

when i first got it it ggave me headaches, on long journeys it even made you dizzy lol

as for sounds good, 4cyl engines rarely sound good, so i doubt anyone considers that.

you should consider if you live in the wrong area though.

what loud 3 cyl cars have you come across then?

here is a video i made of my BMW when it was first started after having the suspension rebiuilt, the back box was off at the time.

If all these "trombone drivers" had 6cyl or more, would that be ok to you?

I could always move, but that wouldn't make the people that do this into great people, would it? You get them everywhere. There are also a lot of V-Twins coming down this way, and those are just as loud, but they sound awesome. I'd say the awesomeness of the sound takes away about 50% of the dick points in that I actually enjoyed something about it rather than just aaaaaaAAAAUUUUU....aaaaUUUUUU....aUUUUUUUUUUU as some Max Power idiot goes through his gears off the lights - at a volume that suggests he's under the impression that his 1.4L engine is something we should all be listening to, over whatever it is that we are doing.

Plenty of home made systems when I was younger straight pipers side exits etc etc on various modded Novas cavaliers xr2s etc etc

Now I'm in my thirties it's all sensible unless required ie updated system on our LCR to gain more power. The only exception is the scooby which came with a full prodrive exhaust which should be law on a boxer engine, and my various golf vr6s and 4motion due to 6pot contents

Had to chuckle to myself filling up yesterday, had a Civic with a drainpipe size exhaust deafening everybody on the forecourt, silently, an e60 M5 pulls up next to it.....

Same thing with trucks, I was fuelling up near Thurrock in Essex, in pulls a Scania R730 - 730 bhp - with a standard factory exhaust, it was quieter than my own R440 model.

Noise usually means attention seeker IMO!!! :D

Civic was standard
Fiesta ST had a expensive Piper System on it which sounded immense.
Astra VXR standard as the exhaust sounded good enough as it was.
Mondeo ST220 is standard.... At the moment.

I like exhausts that are quiet but can make a nice deep burble and pop on demand.

My exhaust is perfect for me.

It's a 3" downpipe that steps down to a 2.5" system from the cat back. I bought it because the standard system was rotten. It's made by Jetex who are known as the 'quiet performers'. Virtually silent when driving normally, barks a bit when you're more enthusiastic.

I've a Milltek system on my 182 and personally I think it sounds great.

Just to be even more annoying I also have the KTR Induction Kit.

In all honestly though, you pretty much have to go an aftermarket exhaust on the 182 after the original exhaust rots away. Renault want a frankly ridiculous amount of money for the standard exhaust. Its much cheaper to by a stainless replacement.

I have an exhaust, that when I boot it I'm sure can be heard miles away, unfortunately, in my quest to squeeze a little more power from my car I had to have it done. I don't care what other people think. :D

To be honest I dont see a reason why people put these big exhausts on their cars. Probably to make the engine sound bigger than it really is.

In my case it was because the manufacturer exhaust costs twice what an after market stainless exhaust costs, and that it may make a little more power with the after market exhaust.

Same with mine, although it is louder than I expected....somehow the cat back I have on this honda is louder than the complete system including manifold on my fiesta. On a cold start its faintly embarrassing, these hondas idle higher initially so they warm up faster and I guess it helps oil pressure too, but it doesn't half make a racket.

My 4 pot sounded awesome - although it was racing exhaust . But it was too loud so back on standard.

No idea why chumps but it on a 1.poo

The amusing thing is that in about 10 years or so time, the kids running around in little chavved up shopping trollys with massive exhausts the size of the Dartford tunnel fitted to them will look back in sheer embarrassment and think...

-'What a complete twonk I must have looked'. ;)
