For as long as I can remember I have been using the old trick of sticking my petrol cap in the trigger of a petrol pump and leaving it to fill my car.

Yesterday a disgruntled Tesco employee told me to remove my petrol filler cap from the pump saying the pump will overflow and it will cause petrol to go everywhere. (I must have done 1000+ fill ups and never had this happen to me.) I asked him who told you this and he replied saying it was Tesco policy. I told him to mind his own business and then he threatened to turn my pump off at which point the pump clicked anyway and my tank was full. I then jumped in my car and waved him goodbye ;). I went back again in my second car in spite and did exactly the same but he never returned.

Has this happened to anyone else or was this simply a case of some guy having a bad day?

I had no idea i could do that, brilliant!

Thank you kind Sir and thank you White Horse Tesco employee for if it was not for you I'd still be forced to compress the handle.

So no it's never happened to me, but it might, fight the power!

It may have been a stupid request but I just do not understand the need to be so obnoxious about it.

If you don't like it shop elsewhere.

Did you stop to think you could be the cause of his bad day?

Why be a douche about it and confront him? Why not just say "OK, sorry", and if you want to carry on doing it just do it in his absense?

Poor guy is working at Tesco for goodness sake. Why treat him like **** and say something so sad as "mind your own business"?

Profile says you're 30! Come on man!

You sound like a lovely person. Not only do you give the guy grief for doing his job, you then return in your other car just to wind him up some more. Very mature.

Why do they remove the clip in the UK anyway?

When i have had the opportunity to put fuel in abroad they have always had a clip on the pump so that i haven't had to hold it.

In Germany, they have the `catch` still fitted to the pumps which let you do that. Make is dead easy to fill up. Always clicks off when full, that`s how they are designed. :)

The mount is there on UK pumps, but they`ve removed the mechanism.

You were probably having a bad day, but don`t worry about it. I`m sure you`ll be a little more understanding when someone is just doing their job next time ;)

I fill up at the bunker so just use the clip thats fitted to the trigger to do the same thing.

In commercial petrol stations I think these are only fitted to the lorry pumps.
