Fitting a gigantic exhaust to a 3 or 4 cylinder car

C'mon, justify yourselves.

One silencer on a four cylinder car.

Do I really have to justify that?

The only car I've owned and the aftermarket exhaust made a difference was a 306 Rallye. The 2.0 lump seem to respond really well to a decat and center box removal. Was loud as hell though unfortunately.

Noise is really anti social and I feel it draws the wrong sort of attention. Prefer a car that's loud when it's the time and place.

my old next door neighbor from many years ago was a crazy Italian.

He was the nicest bloke you could meet but his "ideas" were something else.

I wish I could find a picture but it was so long ago.

He had a 2.2 Audi Coupe which he claimed could do 0-60 in 4 seconds and etc.

It had some sort of stainless steel exhaust, so he took a fire extinguisher, cut it in half and polished it.

He then took his exhaust and cut of his tail pipe and welded the top end of the extinguisher to the exhaust and refitted it.

It actually did not sound "terrible" it was just so so so loud and looked so funny. He loved it which is what counts i suppose lol. It measured over 7 inches wide.

It was a 5 cylinder car

Can you actually get decent aftermarket exhausts for normal cars that don't sound like bean cans?! I think the only thing I regularly hear around where I live that doesn't sound terrible with a loud exhaust is a Scooby! If you count bikes though, my mate popped over on his 1700 Yamaha Warrior yesterday, can hear that one coming!

I'd love an aftermarket exhaust on my ST24 for a bit more noise when booting it (all I can hear is the engine - I'd like it to be a bit of both) - but I wouldn't want something that made it really loud under 3krpm for pottering. Wouldn't know where to start mind.

The Mini sounds quite funky, but its not got an after market exhaust.

The Neon R/T we had sounded pretty cool as well, sounded like KITT when you revved it out.

I think people do it because on the roads the sensation of speed/power/performance can have as big an impact to the driver as actual performance, especially if that driver is relatively inexperienced.

This is something that I've noticed since getting my MX5 with it's stainless exhaust, which if I'm honest is a bit over the top for my taste. Sometimes I get the sensation of giving it the big un despite just keeping up with traffic because of the combination of sensations that the car gives a major one being that exhaust that barks away behind my right ear.

If by 'normal' you mean the average 4-pot, then no, you can't. Making a 4-pot sound good all starts on the other side of the engine. Hondas, E30 M3, Ford BDA, etc etc do it right. A crap-box with a drain pipe on it will aways sound like farting through a trombone. A couple of the Clios above with induction mods sound good. The ones with just the Miltek 'zorst sound crap - no better than a chav'd up Nova. Kinda proves my point.

I prefer a quality sound to an increase in volume...

...and this. Nothing funnier than hearing what sounds like an engine at full chat coming around the corner only to see a Corsa emerge at about 25mph. I would rather that cars are quiet most of the time but then exhibit a nice exhaust tone when they are being driven hard.

I also have to say I'm really not a fan of Suburu Imprezas etc when it comes to exhaust noise. Every Impreza I see seems ridiculously loud ALL the time, even when crawling in traffic.

I know a lot of people here love them and I know they have the performance to match the noise, but I just think they sound obnoxiously loud and awful.

It's even better when there is a massive exhausts on something like a Peugeot 306 HDI or a Diesel Astra Van billowing black smoke.

I have been guilty of fitting a pair of tubular manifolds & 2 inch pipes with a pair of 3" noise cannons to my Capri, but being a V6 it burbles nicely. It is very loud though, it makes the whole garage vibrate when ticking over.

Be interesting to hear what it sounds like with it's new engine next year. :)

Simpson Race Exhausts. Dimensions and lengths of the primaries, secondaries, & collectors were all given to them by the engine builder. Massive silencer is just to try and keep the noise down as much as possible. Got a tiny catalytic converter that gets put into the silencer for when doing events where the MSA require it.

Driveby video. Despite having repacked the exhaust that morning, still had to short-shift at Combe because they'll do you for the driveby noise .

Today I experienced the joy of a fart can so loud, I could feel the vibration through the floor at about 25m from the road in question (with a petrol station in the way). Needless to say I was overjoyed to be diverted from the activity I was undertaking at the time so that I could devote my full attention to some antisocial dick in his stupid popping brass band on wheels.

They don't sound bad, and fair enough if it's a proper engine that's been properly tuned and actually has some legitimate performance....there's just SO MANY of them.

would 3.5inch be "gigantic" on a Fiesta? I could always put my standard on and loose 10bhp just to keep you happy?
