The world's first gun made with 3D printer technology has been successfully fired in the US.

The controversial group which created the firearm, Defense Distributed, plans to make the blueprints available online.

So how can this be policed? How can the guns be traced?

The technology is very impressive, I will say that.

Sensationalism at its best.

Anyone with access to a decent lathe a bench drill and a working knowledge of firearms could knock up a rudimentary firearm within a few hours. Are we going to ban Lathes and drills?

The easy part is making something that can discharge a bullet.

The hard part is getting hold of ammunition (I'm not talking about America where it seems to be harder to purchase alcohol than bullets) and/or making sure the rudimentary firearm doesn't explode in your hand.

As the idea of mass distributing weapons is so moronically boneheaded I could only assume there was some profit behind it somewhere!

its just part of the "free" movement (is that the right word, where people can be self sufficient and make everything themselves and can't be restricted by governments/laws)

and no doubt a good helping off "I was the first"

The printer is hugely expensive, you still have to find a firing pin and ammunition. The gun looks rubbish. Undetectable? Perhaps, but I'm sure there are far better models available which are also mostly plastic or ceramic which wouldn't set off a metal detector.

The media has blown this one out of proportion. OMGZ nerds with 3D printers can make guns. Crims still buy proper guns. The world continues to spin.
