haswell, IvyBridge-E or Sandybridge-E?

I've just gone with a socket 2011. Bought the 3820 which is a massive increase over my old i7 920.

My FPS in BF3 has gone through the roof enabling my 680 sli to breath.

Also, being fairly confident I can go Ivy-E 6 core somepoint in the future is good.

I got the board down (formula) and it is awesome! Just open it up.

For me 2011 is the only option. I hate the thought of the IGP for some reason..I'm allergic to the idea!

Good choice my friend. I knew you'd do it! Bring on the 4930k later in the year!

Out of interest, what Res are you running at with the 680s?

@Alex. Yes I resisted just long enough. My i7 920 wouldn't go over 3.9 without HT disabled. I bought too soon and got a C0 stepping rather than the better D0. Still it has been a very good chip and Im going to keep it on a shelf in a see through case!

@random_guy. I game at 1080p, but its a 120hz monitor. BF3 would run fine to be honest on the i7 920 but the minimums are so much higher with the 3820 once clocked at 4.6 with HT on. In general a much better gaming experience, and much closer to the 120fps mark. Other big thing is that on 64 player servers the machine just carries on stomping. On the i7 920 fps really suffered as the CPU was just a bottleneck on those large servers.

@bookstick777: lol.

My plan is to buy an ivy-e 6c/8c in the next couple of years. And now I have the option to go tri-sli when I choose. Although I'm only running a 750w at the moment..so either of those buys will force a new PSU.

Z77 is the gamers platform. No matter what end of teh gaming spectrum you are. Most games dont use the added cores and ht but beniefit from the raw power of an Ivy core.

There is so little software that pushes any of these chips, I'd go with the cheapest and use the money saved to buy a good monitor.

It's a fair point.

But going for a 3820 doesn't cost more anyway. And just gives you some upgrade options in the future to make it more interesting.

Agreed, Z77 mainstream gaming platform, X79 is the enthusiast / workstation platform. I love the extra cores of X79, wish Intel would release an 8 core desktop CPU already !

Sorry for dragging up an old(ish) thread but rather than creating a new one...

As far as joining the 2011 following this late on goes: first off will it still be worth it now that Haswell is on the doorstep? I know IB-E info is thin on the ground from a Google search but is the tentative 10% increase (depending what you read) from SB-E going/likely to shake the ground with the refined die? Obviously this branches into the question of if it's better to wait for IB-E then is a 2011 motherboard re-iteration on the cards? I already have a 2600k SB but that's my second rig so as my new "primary" I'm gauging what it'd be worth going with.

I plan on upgrading but would like to know whether theres any murmerings indicating it's worth holding out for the few months or just starting to piece together the SB-E now as it's unlikely going to make the world of difference. The rig would be coupled with a couple of 780's and primarly used for gaming (heavy cpu PS2) but also with photoshop use.

well I got 2011 because I have no computer at the moment, if I did have something in the interim, I would definitely wait until next year as that's when the new sockets will come out as haswell will require an entirely new socket for it's enthusiast range, and I think future architecture will be based on that for a while.

I wouldn't get haswell at the moment, the boards for it are lacking compared to the 2011 socket range.

How so? With NDA in place, most of it comes down to assumption rather than fact and tests - not trying to start an argument or anything, I am looking at a big change in June so any insight on haswell or a more established platform, all needs to be considered.

With many of the northbridge/southbridge and VRM functions being incorporated into the Processor, hopefully that will make the board designs more reliable from day 1. That said, the board manufacturers have turned to other aspects to differentiate themselves, such as improved onboard sound and over clocking capabilities.

personal preference, I wait for new hardware to mature first, I've had problems with BIOS on new mobos, drivers on GPUs / sound cards.... it happens.

so not lacking as such, more concerns regarding release stability and performance.

True, first releases can be very hit or miss, I plan to see what issues arise within the first couple of weeks of launch and decide from then.

hopefully they'll release their flagship boards for it sooner than later, but it would be smart to test out on cheaper boards first and then release the more expensive ones when bugs are ironed out etc.

But...but...e-peen! :P

I'd totally go 2011 if i could afford it. I'm a sucker though, they get me every time.

I'm looking for a new gaming PC. I will be using my ATI 7970. When haswell comes out this month should i go for that or the older 39xx Z79?
