Hey all, so due to changes in personal circumstances at work, Im in the market for a diesel, and Im having to sell my civic sport and get a diesel hatchback.
At the moment I've only got the money I'd make from the sale of my civic, and I should get around 3-3.5k from it. Anyways, Im currently thinking of 3 really that are in this price range - the fabia vrs tdi (but i hate the interior and it seems too small inside!) the golf gt tdi (which iirc, has the same 1.9 engine as the fabia) and the astra 150 sri cdti. Now I like the astra the best really, but when it comes to best diesel hot hatches how comes this is never mentioned? I know they are common as muck but that means cheap parts and I can mod it to how I like.
any recommendations? Budget is 3.5k max really, used obviously, preferably no older than 56 reg.
Thanks
Stephen

None of those cars are hot hatchbacks.

A Honda Civic Sport is not a particularly thirsty car. It is, however, a very reliable car. I cannot imagine you are going to save much if any money doing this?

Do a Google search for PD130. Same engine in the vRS, GTTDI, polo gt etc etc. Oh,and good luck finding anything 56 or newer for that money. :(

i know diesels arent the most popular, but for example, my mum and dads focus mk1 got 600 miles to a tank driving at normal speeds, mixture of motorway, town and city driving. my civic hits the petrol light at about 270 usually, which is good for a petrol, but i need more than that. Plus, Im not going to complain at an extra 50bhp (or 100 when i get it remapped).

If you think moving to a diesel is going to half your fuel costs over driving a 1.6 Civic I think you are in for a bit of a shock.

Don't these things have a 50odd litre tank? If so that means you are getting an economy figure in the low - mid 20's if it's empty after 270 miles?

That's worse than our 2 ton Jeep Grand Cherokee and not far off what my Capri 2.8i does, and I used to rag the knackers off it.

I'd think your car is either broken or you need to adjust your driving style.

Astra 888? google is your friend. can beat an astra vxr in a rolling start, and is only a nose off of it from the dead.

No.

Its just a remapped diesel 1.9. Remap a vxr and it would dry bum the living dirty poop out of the 888.

The 888 is good for a diesel and it has a lot of torque, because its a diesel. Reason why it might do well in a rolling start in a high gear.

Could it be classed as a hot hatch? No. Its sounds like a tractor.

Less than 3.5k for a 56 reg VAG engined car? You might scrape a sheddy 05 Fabia or Ibiza with moon miles but I wouldn't touch it with someone else's barge pole.

Keep the Civic.

Also, if you only get 270 from a tank you are only getting 27mpg out of that Civic Sport (which has a 45L tank apparently). Unless you are doing mostly short trips and town driving that is awful.

and if you are doing short trips and town driving, you wont get a huge amount more than that out of a diesel.
