How much free space to leave on my Nexus 7 to stop it slowing down?

Try a hard reset and leave 2-3GB free.

I think that should work.

It's fine with 2-3Gb free without the hard reset. That is disappointing though.

if you drop the phone regularly then it will become slow/unresponsive, especially the touch screen.

It's not a phone and it's never been dropped. This question is about the widely known phenomenon of the Nexus 7 slowing down when it's storage nears capacity. Thanks for trying though.

I had a bike crash a couple of weeks ago and thought I'd totaled my 3 week old nexus 7 as well as my bike - the thing wouldn't respond at all even though it made sounds and connected to my PC.

I decided that as I'd have no leg to stand on on the warranty front I had nothing to lose, so i held it screen up, flat, at head height and dropped it onto carpet.

Working fine now :) And I've got a new bike too!

Free app space affects performance?

This is nothing I have experienced on any of the Android devices I have used and nothing I have ever heard of before. Nexus 10 is currently telling me that I am full up and it's still as nippy as ever.

That may well be true but I can assure you this irritation on the Nexus 7 is very real.

Is there some kind of virtual memory thing with Android as this can be the only explanation? In any case that is a lot of virtual memory needed for a phone :D
