Story here

I think I've heard of her before but have no idea what her music is like. What struck me about her story was her statement in court:

"I am a child of former slaves who had a system imposed on them," Hill said in court. "I had an economic system imposed on me."

Now, admittedly I am white middle class, but I'm really struggling to understand how she could possibly realistically link slavery to the tax system. Is this not playing the race card a little too far? Very odd.

I see no issue with this, totally possible. 150 year old women have babies all the time!

I dunno, some of the more extreme elements here call tax "legalised theft", and slavery from that era was essentially legalised theft of freedom, so maybe from that view she has a point.

tbh shes one of the most talented female singers there is .

like most talented people they are a bit loopy :D

Lauryn Hill has said a lot of stupid stuff over the years.

Hill failed to pay taxes on about $1.8m (£1.2m) of earnings between 2005-07.

$1.8m in two years. Sound like the system has been very unfair.

No, she doesn't. All she is doing is trivialising one of the darkest acts in human history to justify her not paying what she owed.

Hill has always had a chip on her shoulder and is ready to play the race card whenever possible.

There used to be a rumour (that will no doubt be stated as fact by someone else in this thread) that she once told MTV she'd rather starve than have white people buying her albums. It wasn't actually true but the fact it's so wildly accepted by people who hear it tells you what you need to know about her. If she didn't say it, you can easily imagine her doing so.

Do you still have to pay it though after the jail sentence? I'd do three months in the clink for $1.8 million dollars.

Yes, you have to pay and pay more in most case. It's not $1.8m in unpaid tax, that's undeclared income. The tax bill would have been much less.

Never heard of her and a what a non-story.....

you may not of heard of her but she is / was is considered to be one of the best female vocalists ever.

after she did the big album which sold close to 20 million copies she basically went away from celebrity life and chose to raise a family.

her beliefs are her own . whether right or wrong i guess thats up to her choice.

People have seriously not heard of the Fugees ?? they had a few "hits" that were no.1 for weeks and weeks back in the day. Combined with her solo career

interesting defense i wish her, errrrr, luck.
