Getting a cheaper deal from your provider - Retentions team

I've been through the upgrades process with Orange and had to request my PAC. Wasn't being offered anything at all and was ready to leave and gave it one last shot and finally got someone who was offered a decent deal. I started off being offered:

18 month contract
200 mins
300 texts
500 Mb data
unlimited landlines
Free desire C, Xperia J or Ace 2.

Ended up with
18 month contract
400 mins
300 texts
500 Mb data
unlimited landlines
£6.98
Had to pay for handset but got an Xperia J for £80 so still saving £100 over the contract duration.

Would have got an Huawei Ascend P1 LTE for £70 but was too slow and it was no longer available. Moral of story is when you get offered a decent deal - take it quickly :)

My SIM only deal is stupidly good and T-Mobile retentions wouldn't touch me for a drop on a S4 on an actual contract, I pay £5/month for 500 mins, 600 texts, unlim data, and all I was offered on the S4 was the £36/mo unlim plan w/ phone for £99, or £22/mo 500 mins, nlim txts, unlim data & phone for £280  err....no! I'll just buy an S4 outright and keep paying £5 a month I think! :o

ive just asked for my pac code from vodafone and they asked why i wanted to leave.
i told them i've seen an sim only deal from virgin, unlimited calls ,data and text for £15 a month rolling contract.

they could not match it and gave me the pac code without much resistance ,their equivalent offer is £20.50 ,
so after 10 years of being a vodafone customer, they could'nt even knock a fiver off

Well I might go look at an S4 tomorrow to decide if that's the phone I want ... Then I might ring up and see what O2 say :)

I'm in the exactly same position as you,i work for tesco and can get some very very good deals with them and will try my luck with o2 next month, either way ill get a good deal one way or another.

I do want the s4 as ive been a iphone user for 4 years.

Well I spoke to someone on live chat today just to confirm that I can get my PAC code, not use it, and carry on as normal ... And they said that's right :)

... But then ...

They asked my why I would want the PAC code, I said because other providers are offering better value deals and the guy said that O2 will offer better deals to keep me as a customer and if my contract was due for renewal he would be able to tell me these better deals online ... But as my contract is due for renewal in July he said I have to ring 202 (free from my phone) and the retentions team will be able to tell me the deal

So tomorrow I might go look at an S4 in my hand just to make sure I like it ... But where do I go from there...

When I ring 202 and then they give me their best deal, is that likely the last time they will call me and I either take that deal or go elsewhere? Or is the best plan to say alright I'll think about it, make sure I get the PAC code, then hang up in the hope that they call back with even better deals the next day / next few hours?

I suppose I can hang up and still go back to the original deal they offer me on the phone if they don't ring me again and it is a deal I'd like to take ... Just ring them again and say so

I'm pretty sure too that once you have requested your PAC code that is it. You can't change your mind. Some providers also disconnect you there and then. They refund you the difference of the month via cheque. Has been my experience with Orange.

That's contrary to my recent experience with Orange. I asked for my PAC because I was going to go to Giff Gaff and they didn't say anything about me being cut off, and my service continued for a week or so, at which point I then negotiated a new deal with them.

When I called for my code, they tried to retain me but they wanted me to sign up to another contract even though I just wanted to carry on with sim only. The person didn't seem to know what they were doing and they'd never even heard of Giff Giff. But then a very nice chap called me about a week later and gave me a decent deal with no contract, which turned out well considering Giff Gaff never sent me my sim!

So based on that I think I wouldn't even bother calling up and asking for a decent deal. Just get the pac code and wait for them to call you.

Yeah that makes sense with what O2 told me, he said your contact will get cancelled immediately ... IF you use the PAC code anywhere

And okay yeah I'll wait, but when I request the PAC code I will see if they offer me any deals then too as I assume they will try to

Yeah vodafone are pretty dire with matching deals, doesn't help that their tariffs are all so rigid and awkwardly structured. I don't want/need 300 extra minutes just to get back to the 500mb data I currently have, and I can get unlimited data elsewhere, something vodafone won't even offer me!

i take it all back , they rung me the next day and offered to match the virgin £15 deal but not the rolling monthly contract , i thought what the hell ,and took it ,at least with vodafone i'm getting good reception . with virgin i'm not too sure .
so i think its works like this
ask for pac code, refuse any deal they offer you ,then wait for phone call the next day ..

Well I've seen and played with an S4 and it is what I want

Going to ring retentions tomorrow and see what they can do for me

How much data did they give you?

i was on an old blackberry contract, sim only ,1200 mins 1 gb internet for £30
made a mistake a few years. after the year passed ,vodafone rung me and said do you want to continue another year , without thinking i said yes .

what i should have done was waited until i saw a better deal and asked for pac code like i've done now.

This is not the case at all, for any network.

Your PAC code is valid for 30 days and if it is not used it expires.

Well I rung them

They said they can only match another providers price if the contract is within the final 30 days and they have to be able to see the deal on the providers website or on the carphone warehouse website ... My deal I got from CPW is with O2 anyway, so there'd be no benefit

Anyway I took the PAC code so I will see if they ring me with any deals, if not I'll just go with the CPW deal

And just to confirm the posts above, he said the PAC will expire in 30 days if I don't use it and I'll continue to be billed as normal ... But if I do use it my nubmer will be swapped over and the billing will stop :)
