AMD 20nm Volcanic Islands “Hawaii” Architecture Leaked?

The architecture in question is from the flagship 20nm Volcanic Islands chip “Hawaii” featuring 4096 stream processors. That’s almost double to what we get in today’s flagship Radeon HD 7970 GHz edition GPU. AMD hasn’t taken such a big leap since Radeon HD 5870 which double the stream processor count to 1600 compared to 800 SPs on the Radeon HD 4870. The switch from AMD’s VLIW4 (HD 6000 series) to GCN 1.0/1.1 (HD 7000) was more of a die shrink from 40nm to 28nm, but if this architecture shot holds any truth then AMD would not only be shrinking the die down to 20nm but also bring radical changes to the whole architecture.
AMD Volcanic Islands “Hawaii” AMD Southern Islands “Tahiti”
Die Size 20nm 28nm
Stream Processors 4096 2048
Compute Units 16 32
TMUS 256 128
ROPS 64 32
Memory 4 GB GDDR5 3 GB GDDR5
Memory Bus 512-bit 3840-bit

The 4096 stream processors would be arranged in 16 SPUs (Stream processor modules), each holding 64 processors split into 4 Compute modules and would feature 4 ACE (Asynchronous Compute Engines) units which accept data and pass it over to the SPUs for processing. The Volcanic Islands “Hawaii” chip would comes with 256 Texture mapping units or TMU and 64 ROPS (Raster operation Units). The most intresting thing about the architecture is that AMD would use a 512-bit memory bus instead of the 384-bit on current HD 7900 series parts which would allow for higher native VRAMs of 4 GB. In addition to the main parallel compute module (PCM), the Hawaii chip would also feature 8 SPMs (Serial processing modules) which allows for parallel computing and could be a dedicated HSA module.

There’s a lot more information that can be seen on the architecture shot but unfortunately most of it is blurred due to the picture being of lower resolution. We advise our readers to take the above posted information with a grain of salt since this could just be wishful thinking by the user or made up by him. Only time would tell whether this is the real deal or not. But we do have the slight bit of details that now confirm the existence of Volcanic Islands and their launch by the end of 2013 so stay tune for more news as soon as its available.

Very unlikely it'll have a 512 bit bus width, though TMSC have said they're ahead of schedule with the 20nm fab process. Early next year I think and it'll no doubt knock Titan clean off that pedestal.

Edit// LtMatt - these are Titans specs. 2688 FP32 cores, 896 FP64 cores, 224 texture units, and 48 ROPs.

If specs are right, the Volcanic flagship card will be the 7990 on a single chip.

I'm sitting this gen out until AMD show their hand. I would be gutted to plump for a GTX 770 / 780 and then AMD release the Kraken !

4096 Shaders? Yes please !

That's 7990 power in a single GPU .

I hope they don't do a nvidia with the pricing though. They could win lots of fans by pricing it competitively.

I think it will be expensive but not 'Titan' Ridiculous, depends what Nvidia counter with at the time.

Looks like the Nvidia 7XX series could be a filler for the next 6 - 8 months while Maxwell is being prepared.

The 760 ti - 770 could still represent good value for someone who needs a GPU now, but for those of us already on 6XX or 7XXX cards I think it's sensible to wait and see what happens from AMD's side. To many things coming out this year.. New consoles, new phones, new GPU's, new CPU's.. Gonna be skint !

They also know that if they fix the CF frame time issues and bring out a rock solid contender, they can charge those prices too. People will buy it. I personally can't wait to see if this comes true, I wonder how it stacks up against Maxwell.

(Is an image allowed? I'm not sure why there is an image tab if not? Can a mod remove if not allowed plz.)

Behold the monster below. Plz be legit lol.

hmmmm

im not so sure, AMD have just released the 7990 and now they may have a card with 7990 power on one chip?

if it is true ill get two! :D

Haha, thinking the same..

The last time AMD doubled a GPU's shaders was the HD 4870 '800' - HD 5870 '1600'.

So we know it's possible, maybe this leak is for the full chip though, and retail will only see a cut down 2500 - 3000 core variant or something. It looks promising though..
