120hz or not 120hz that is the question.

Hello guys,

I'm looking to get a new monitor 24" people tell me to get a 120hz one as it's better. I only get 60fps or less on my games so to my understanding to get the full use from a 120hz monitor I need to have 120fps in game is this correct?

Many Thanks.

Pretty much yes. Many do say that using 120hz is smoother regardless of the fps you can achieve...but this isn't worth buying 120hz monitor for.

If you plan to get 120fps in the future (new gfx etc) then go for it. Even in the windows environment 120hz makes navigation and mouse movement something to behold. I liken the movement of the cursor to be like moving over ice.

Otherwise, just go for a nice IPS panel or stick with what you have!

It is worth saying though that trying to get 120fps in FPS games is worth it. If you don't play FPS (CS, BF3 etc...CoD doesnt count!) games then don't bother.

I have both a 120hz and 60hz IPS Dell sat next to each other and generally do all of my windows stuff on the 120hz.

I can forgive the less accurate colour reproduction for the benefits it provides.

I do play FPS but only for single player I don't bother with online play, I'm currently using a 32" TV as a monitor tho it looks ok I was thinking a dedicated monitor would be better.

CS? if cs doesn't do 120 fps your cpu is a piece of crap. Most people get 999 Fps on CS and CSS

You still get a benifit even if you only get 70 fps. 120hz is so much smoother when moving quickly like you do in CSS when you flick aim someone. That's where there true advantage comes. That's why pro gamers until 120hz flat panels rarely didn't use CRT as CRT could achieve much better hz and thus was smoother for them.

I can honestly say when I went to lan with my 120 HZ monitor and put it next to my team mates 60hz While he was speccing me (he was dead) it looked bitty buggy and really unsmooth on his screen He was blown away and bought a monitor that day.

Didn't I say that? But that it isn't worth it, which is my opinion unless your pushing good frames.

Also more important than 120hz, if you barely pushing 60fps, is response time...

do people not know how to use the search function? I see this question posted every week

If people only used search this forum would die because I can pretty much guarantee nearly every question has been answered in some form or another.
If your not willing to help simply don't post.

Being on a 120hz Samsung screen myself which is pretty good for anything 2D I would still switch to an IPS 1440 if I could just get one with around 85hz(through OC, but not touching anything only available on ebay). 60hz though im very tired off and im not going back to that.

if you get a 120hz monitor, and turn down your settings so you get 90+ frame rates and you will never be able to go back

I would kind of disagree tho depends how serious a gamer you are - why 120Hz panels are so good for gaming isn't just that they operate at 120Hz and can render 120fps but that due to the focus on high end gaming they are typically designed to have lower input latency, faster pixel reponse (less residual image artifacts/blurring) on fast movement, etc. than a typical 60Hz panel even when not pumping out ultra high framerates.

I didn't get that with my Asus VG278H, windows told me that I was at 120hz, the monitor told me via the menu screen it was at 120Hz, but I couldn't tell the difference at all until I started up a game. To me windows felt the same
