Just a real quick one. I want to book flights for the 21st - 24th June, I could book the flights this Friday, but it will be a bit of a push as I have other stuff I wouldn't mind getting first.

What inflation, if any am I going to occur by waiting a week?

They are around £480-£500 at the moment.

Thanks

its a guessing game unfortunately, it could go up or it could stay the same. i wouldnt imagine it would go up more more than it is now if it does though.

Is it out of the realms of possibility to go up by £100? I know it's a question no one can answer... But no harm in asking haha.

Book through Flightcentre and they can hold your flight for a week.

Thing is... its the tax that can go up... I did this in February for June flights and they went up about £1 a day...

If you would like a contact let me know :)

There is no way the tax is going up between now and June so don't worry about that.

500 is already a reasonably high fare for New York so I would be surprised to see it climb much higher unless the specific flight you want becomes near full.

As someone who has done this many times... it's not inflation you need to be worried about... it's people buying the cheaper tickets before you do.

Prices go up as you get nearer the date.. book early in my experience. Also expect price hikes during school holidays

The conventional wisdom is usually 'book early' but in my experience it doesn't work like this.

Logically you would think the airline would first release the cheapest seats, then sell them out, then the next price tier, etc etc.

But it doesn't happen like this - the airlines release seat allocations priced at what they think the market will pay at that moment. 2 weeks ago you could fly to New York via VS for £368 return. If you try and book now for a flight to New York in a years time with the same airline it's actually very expensive.

What actually happens is that prices go up and down like a rollercoaster pretty much right up until a couple of weeks before departure, unless the plane physically sells out.

My last transatlantic flight was into JFK and out of MIA. I paid £399 retun 7 weeks before departure. Right up until the day I booked the prices were north of £500 for months before that..

So there is simply no way of telling them. Pot luck. Which I can live with, at least then I won't kick my self for not buying them if they do go up, as there is also a chance for them to go down.

So overall, best to save up, when you have the money, book the flights.

The best thing to do is work out what you think the average 'fair' price is for the route, then book when the price gets as close to it as you are comfortable with. It's a gamble really. I've still not booked my flights yet because I feel the price they are on offer for is noticeably above what I'd expect to pay. It might backfire and burn me, it might pay off and get me a decent deal. You never know.

Well, I'm expecting between £450-550 for a direct flight from either LHR to JFK.

And sky scanner is reporting £505 for a direct flight. Is it true sites like SkyScanner see cookies from previous searches and increase their prices?

Whereas I'd personally be disappointed to pay that (Though I think it's now too late to do much better than that given how close your dates are).

I'd consider a good deal sub £400 outside of school holidays and Christmas on that route. It is the worlds most competitive international route and there are often good prices to be had. A few weeks back Virgin were, as I said, offering direct flights to JFK for £368 in June.

Crazy :( Maybe I should shop around then? I'm basing all my prices off sky scanner... I rang a company who dealt with my India flights and all my flights around europe (Dial a flight), and they said £508...

Skyscanner is about as good as it gets. Nobody has a properly competitive flight sale on at the moment, sadly.

Are you really only going for 3 days? Seems a crazy amount of time to spend somewhere after saving up £500 for flights! Going Friday back Monday is also another thing that whacks the price up.

If you went Thursday to Tuesday instead not only would you have a better amount of time to make all that expense seem worth the bother, but BA have direct flights at £460 (Whereas your dates give United as the cheapest at £504).

I read a good tip somewhere, which is to switch on Private Browsing/Incognito Mode on your browser and double-check prices in there, because it's sometimes skewed by location etc. I haven't successfully found this myself, but never hurts to double check.

Sadly, the extra 2 days off from work means I make much more of a loss haha. And the person I'm visiting is only able to get those days off as well. So yea, I will be getting an early flight on Friday (I don't suffer from Jet lag too bad, at all in fact... Never been an issue). So at least I get a full Friday (2 hours ahead with the time difference by the time you land if I'm correct? As in, leave at 7am arrive at 9am local time.

Then fly home Monday night around 7pm. Again, it's a large chunk of money but it's more than just a weekend trip with the camera, a large opportunity is underlined. If it was just for that, a camera snapping trip. Then no, not a chance I would pay that price haha. Just stating this so you don't get too tied up on the reason for me going for a short time.

u wot m8? Skyscanner don't have any prices, they just show you other people's, so how could they possibly skew them based on your previous searches? I use Skyscanner all the time but I don't think I've ever gone further than the price results page as I then go direct/check Quidco etc from there.

Just a rumor I had been told lol.
